Went off of this access today. Caught a few bass and one decent northern. Any suggestions on where from this access I can catch some sizeable northern?

South of that put in same side about 1/4-1/3 mile down river. There is a small bay/ inside turn the river makes and backwater. Lot's of rocks so be leery, but you might find what you are looking for.

You find one of them toothy bast@#$ with a purty green jig in it's mouth I want it back (the jig only).

Also try north of the access around Winnebago point area.

The pike seemed to be in the thick weeds last weekend. If you put on a weedless frog you should be able to hook some pike and for you it would be the occasional problem bass!!

Throw a spinnerbait or a crankbait on those weed edges to and you should find some fish. If you go upstream 2-3 milews there are a lot of weed edges that you can see laying on top of the water.

Osok-So towards the papermill from the access? Do quite a few ducks hangout in there? I think I know where you are talking. Are the rocks marked? Ducksnbucks-where is that point? As for weeds are you talking about close to shore or out in the middle?

The rocks AREN'T marked. but with the recent change in weather and water levels finally dropping it should be more apparent. And yes, at times there are a lot of ducks in that area.

Fished for bass north of the landing on Saturday for about 1.5 hours. Managed 5 smallies and 1 pike. 3 smallies between 13-15, 1 at 17.5, and 1 at 19.5. Also lost 2 other very nice fish on senko's and had 3 fish boil and miss the shallow crankbait. Water is extremely clear, could see the bottom in 6+ feet of water. Also, some of the weeds that I fished near were dying as well. Going to try for 1 more trip next weekend and then hunting begins!

I take it you were fishing the deeper holes for walleyes. What were you using, jigs and minnows? I wouldn't mind tangling with a few smallies.

I'd like a nice 23 in eye for the frying pan! :>)

Eyeguy, a 23" walleye would be a nice "eater" but I was referring to 14-23 FOW.

My son and I were on the river on Sat. Didn't get on the water until about noon. The smallmouth were biting really good until the wind picked up or I should say, changed directions. Also caught a few northerns and a couple of walleyes. Everything was caught in 4' or less. Nothing big.

I went north of the Sartell River road access about a mile or so and then south of the access about a mile or so.

Not even a bite you say? Most of the time if you just work the shorelins in that area you will pick up a decnt mixed bag of fish.

Blanchard is a decent option, lots of good clasic river walleye structure just south of Lindberg state park.

Fished this area this beautiful evening. Got out there around 7 came in about 9. C&R'd one 13" crappie, 2 little northerns and 2 walleyes around 13". Caught all of my fish on a green jig tipped with a shiner. 10ft was the ticket. Had the vexilar on the trolling motor and marked fish from 6-17 ft but once you hit 10ft the fish would bite.

I just really want a good spot in the area to catch some decent northerns. Everytime I go out I don't catch much. Maybe one of you guys would like to take an adult fishing ha ha.

Above Sartell is the right section of river for northerns. I have always used 3in twisters and a 1/8 oz head as a stand by if all other baits fail, white or rootbeer are my two best colors. Husky jerks are another good bait, but it can get spendy quick when you are dealing with the river and northerns.

I've got a hot spot for some eel pout if you're interested in catching some of those. smile

Any as of late? I would think the water would be getting to warm for them to bite. Might be me but I have never caught one after the water temp gets past 60 or so.

If scent is not that important to you, which I don't think it really is in a river setting for pike/bass/walleye....you can pick up a 20ct pack of 3 inchers from Apex for a buck.......here is what the grub/tail/twister looks like.

The 1/8 oz head must be like a jig head?

most people just use the plain round head jigs with these. you can use either painted ones or unpainted ones.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
