Directions to Wheelers Point Lake of the Woods<P>Depart I94 to Clearwater exit #178, go right to Clear Lake, Hwy 10. Left turn on Hwy 10, going north. Towns to pass, Sauk Rapids, Royalton, Little Falls, to Motley. In Motley watch for Hwy 64 signs. It’s a right turn just past the Rail Road tracks in town. Go about ¼ mile and turn left on 64. Follow 64 past Leader and Akelgy. Short right turn at Akelgy, and then left to continue on Hwy 64. Follow 64 to the end at Hwy 200. Left on 200 where it merges with Hwy 71. Follow 71 to 71/Hwy 2, left on Freeway around the town of Bemidji. About 4 or 5 miles on freeway, watch for right merge to north 71. Follow 71 to Blackduck. At Blackduck, take 72 north to Hwy 1. Right on ramp to Shooks, left at Shooks to continue on 72 to Kelliher. GOOD GAS STOP on the left in Kelliher. Prices are usually 10 cents cheaper than in Baudette. Follow 72 past Waskish north to end at Hwy 11. Turn left at Hwy 11 into Baudette and OBSERVE the speed limits!!!! They tag over 30MPH!! Go through the town and just past the town watch for Hwy 172 to “Wheelers Point”, 12 miles north. Watch for Deer, especially one to two hours before sunset and after dark too!!! If you see one, there is probably more coming. ....Kaz<P><p>[This message has been edited by Kaz (edited 12-04-2003).]

North 169 to Grand Rapids left on Hwy#2 to Deer River then right on Hwy #46 to Northhome thru town take a left on #1 follow signs that will take you to #72 north to Baudette. There is No faster way I've tried them all more than once.<BR> P.S. Dont speed in Aitkin county...Trust me!

that is the exact way I head up every time from the cities.

Stay on I-35 to Moose Lake<BR>Get on Hwy 2 to Grand Rapids<BR>To Hwy 46 to Northome....take a little jag on Hwy 71 and you run right into the yellow brick road of Hwy 72 which takes you to God's Country.<P>Good Luck

I have found that Hoda's directions are the quickest from the east side of the cities, except he/she forgot to add to take 73 from Moose Lake to Floodwood, which is where you'll get on highway 2. Your profile says you're from Minneapolis, though, so one of the other members' routes might be better for you.<P>Mark

35E to Barnum Hwy 6( skip Moose Lake and Kettle River this way ) to 173 north to floodwood. Hwy 2 west to deer river. Then north 46 and continue as stated above. smile.gif<P>------------------<BR>" chaos , panic and disorder ... my work here is done. "<BR> Upper Red Lake Area Association Member

Why can't they make a freeway that goes directly to Baudette? 80mph? It would definately get the traffic. And my tax money would go for something useful!!!

I agree with Warrior. Coming from Blaine last March we took the 35E to Moose lake route up and then the 169 way home. The way home was between 30 and 45 minutes faster. Even counting the 45 minutes pit stop in Blackduck on the way TO God's country. <BR>Can't wait until 2/25.<p>[This message has been edited by Boatlessinblaine (edited 12-04-2003).]

A lot of it depends on which day you're traveling, time of day, etc. The fastest I've ever made the trip was 4 hours, 45 minutes from Baudette to Hampton, which is a little ways south of the cities. That was going the Moose Lake route. We had almost zero traffic, though, and there must've been a ton of ice stuck to my right boot because it was feeling pretty darn heavy! grin.gif<P>Mark

Jeez! You averaged over 70 miles/hr. That's definitely got to be a record for quickest time to or from LOW.

Hey mwchiefs how do u check out someones profile ?? I have always taken 371 up to #2 then east a couple miles to the 'scenic road' north to Pennington and Black Duck, then do the Shooks shake and up to Washkish and Baudete, #72. Might have to take a look at the Bemidji turn , that 'scenic road is a sob , tough on equipment and my back ! Too bad there aint a shortcut to bypass Bemidji to get on 71.

I agree 110% WHATT!!!!!!!!<BR>Good Call

Warrior is definitely right. I have driven all routes and none are faster than that 1.

Hey Buckets...click on the icon with the "little face and question mark"...there's the profile for that user...

Take hwy 2 around bemidji and take 71 north. That goes right through blackduck and keeps you on the hwy. This way you bypass all of the bemidji traffic and head strait up! <P>Kupcho

My vote would be for the directions that KAZ gave (post #2). I come out of St Cloud and you will find cleaar sailing. 371 is a mess with the stop lights and numerous towns. I can leave St Cloud at 500am and be in Baudette by 1000am after a breakfast stop. This is the only route I run. Bill

corretion KAZ was post #3...oops

This is the route I Take. This route takes off 10 miles vs. the 169 straight to Grand Rapids route because you don't travel East around Aitkin. The only stop lights are in Deer River:<P>US 169 North to MN 6 / CR18, (Garrison) Left heading West<BR>MN 6 / CR 18 to MN 6 Right Heading North<BR>MN6 to MN6 / MN 210, (Deerwood) Left<BR>MN 6 / MN 210 to MN 6 right Go to Crosby on MN 6<BR>At Stop sign in Crosby make a right continuing on MN 6<BR>Take MN 6 to MN6 / MN 200, (Remer) right<BR>Go through Town and follow the signs for MN 6 Grand Rapids Go left<BR>MN 6 to MN 6 / US 2 Left, (there is a Deer River shortcut marked I believe the road is CR 11, if you miss this left MN 6 will take you to US 2<BR>MN 6 / US 2 to MN 46, (Deer River) MN 6 goes right just before the road for MN 46 pay attention or you’ll end up on 6 instead of 46.<BR>MN 46 to US 71, (Northome) Left <BR>US 71 3 miles to MN 1 Right <BR>MN 1 4.9 miles to MN 72 (Shooks) Right<BR>MN 72 55 miles to MN 11 / MN 72 Left<BR>Go through Baudette to MN 172 Right<P>

Interesting, I highlighted some of the routes on the map and my route still "looks" like the shortest but probably not the fastest cause of all the little towns and curves. From the Brain town anyways. I will give #6 a try next week, I know that the stretch out of Crosby was redone recently so looks like a good road. I see that little shortcut too, thanks. It sure looks a lot closer than the 169 route than 10 miles though ..?? <BR>After a year of useign this great site I just found the 'profiles' icon , thanks

Warrior has the right idea, I have used this route many times, 169 is pretty nice driving.<BR>If you for get anything there is a Walmart<BR>on your right as you head into Grand Rapids.<BR>

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
