Its been a nice week of weather and the fishing is doing pretty decent in our area. Leech was ok we were spinning in the weeds and caught perch northern and a few walleyes. we were in pretty shallow water 7-10 seemed to be the depth with a 3/16 oz bullet sinker and a 1.2 mph speed.

Bowstring was doing good with the same spinner rig cruising the shorelines. On Bowstring we were fishing shallower in the 6.5-9 ft depths were the best and we have even seen a couple crappies show up. Red of course has still been producing lots of fish with the spinner also. You can also use crank baits and a jig and minnow for the fish on red seems like those fish just keep biting.

Winnie continues with just a few fish being caught with the spinner and a few more coming off the major bars with a lindy and leech or a crawler.

Sand lake is producing a good number of fish but we have to sort out a lot of small fish to get the keepers. they are going on jig and minnow or a lindy rig with a leech.

good luck fishing

Winnie is finally starting to produce a few fish. with fish out on the bars and even the humps with lindy’s and leeches and crawlers or on top of some of the bigger bars in the 15 ft depths pulling spinners and a piece of crawler. Also heard reports of walleye on the north shore with spinners.

Bowstring is still putting out walleye on the weed edges with a spinner and a piece of crawler or minnow or some guys are just using a plain crawler on lindy and pulling in fish.

Sand was ok also with most of the fish coming in the 15-20 ft of water on a jig and minnow. they have been on the deep humps. spinners have also worked but you need a little wind to make this presentation to work.

I had the opportunity to take a couple from Germany fishing this last week. It is always fun to show people from other countries the fishing we have up here and to let them experience our freedoms we have in the outdoors. they are very regulated over there and lets us all hope that dump doesn’t happen here

good luck fishing

Fishing Report for Deer River Grand Rapids Area August 25th 2014

Big Winnie has a good Northern bite along the east shore 7 to 8 feet in the weeds, lots of 25 + inchers, nice perch are showing up along the north shore rocks humps, the best walleye action has been in Cut-foot 11 to 13 ft. we did well pulling spinners tip with minnow also some crappies are staring to show up shallow weeds. Leech lake also has some good northern pike action also along with a few nice walleyes mixed in, pulling spinners along the break lines or weed lines also picking up some nice crappies and perch making a nice mixed bag. Red lake still as a good bite, again pulling spinners 6 to 8 ft. tip with a 1/2 crawler, some day you may have to cover some ground to locate them. The other area lake are still producing fish, check shoreline weed areas and shoreline breaks pulling spinners or rigging with crawlers. Fall crappie action is already starting. So go out and enjoy a day on the water, be safe and have fun. This area fishing guide Charlie Worrath www.mnfishingpros.com

the name of the game in our area lately is the panfish weather it’s the crappies or the sunnies they seem to be the active fish right now. Sand, cutfoot, little cutfoot , leech and even bowstring have all been turning out nice crappies. On the deeper lakes like sand and cutfoot look for the deep breaks and other objects on the bottom of the deep breaks like trees or stumps and start searching. You will see the schools of fish on your graph. once you find the drop a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig with a little crappie minnow and you should be pulling fish in. The key is to stay on them. sometimes they move around and you have to keep with them. on some of the bigger lakes with no steep breaks look to cover ground in the deeper weeds off points or corners with some pencil reeds around. we use spinners for these tipped with a crappie minnow and troll at 1 mph till you find them and stick with the school and stay in that area

good luck fishing

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year

I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of

Thanks Mike.  I've been looking at bags of it for years but never wanted to chance wasting good meat on it.  I have a gas and charcoal grills, but really love the flavor of charcoal over gas. Most of the time it's if we have time to use one or the other.

On the south end...   The big open water, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  The bays and tributaries of LOW such as Zippel Bay, Bostic Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  The lake is in good shape for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. The many bays and backwaters of the lake have been receiving attention from spring pike anglers.  Some pike have already entered the bays, spawned and gone back out to the lake, but there are still a pile of fish to be had.   The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Another great week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  The bite has been very good and lots of fish of all sizes are being boated.     Sturgeon are being caught from Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River all the way to Birchdale, about 42 miles.  There are many boat ramps along the river to make life easy.  Starting from the east going west...   -Nelson Park at Birchdale (About 30 miles east of Baudette) -Frontier (9 miles west of Birchdale) -Vidas (Near Clementson Rapids) -Timbermill Park (East Baudette) -Peace Park (International Drive, Baudette) -Wheeler's Point (mouth of Rainy River)  The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice free.  Resorts are gearing up for the fishing opener which is expected to be excellent.  The late ice bite was very good and the walleyes are in good numbers amongst the islands area of the NW Angle.
