College Hockey - 2011/2012

Tech has a really fun fanbase that travels pretty well for the school size (lots of engineering nerds). Hard not to like them. It's on my to-do list to get to a game in Houghton.

I don't think they even have a airport in Houghton but who am I to talk. Grand Forks isn't exactly a booming metro place either smile. Could be a fun trip.

Gophs looked pretty stinking good last night. I tell you if we had a second line that put the effort in to score we would be an actual contender. Honestly. if Jake Hanson could score we would be blowing teams away.

I saw some good things last night. Mainly the fact that Budish is peaking and the third line is pretty darn good. With all the time Budish has missed it was only a matter of time until he got back on track. Honestly watch out if he is really peaking. YOu already know Rau and Bjuggy will do their part. I say separate that line and put Budish on the second to give them a spark.

I hope they let that annoying Tech band at the X again this year. They are a little annoying, but it pretty cool, it just bleeds college hockey. I cant believe they have to pay their own way there....

Sounds like Rowney is trying to be a Frattin with these numbers coming out of nowhere. Stinking Sue

UND won a tight game last night. Tech's goalie was hot. Eidsness started in net for UND, Aaron Dell is injured(listed day to day). With all these injuries that UND has had this year, I wouldn't expect them to be a bubble team in the NCAA tourney. There's been a few guys who have step up this year besides Rowney. UND needs another win tonight and then at least two more in the next 4 games and there in good shape to move on. Its gonna be tight for the Sioux here on out.

If Minnesota starts to be peak now it should make for a interesting final five. I see Denver shutout sconie. I wander how UMD looked against Mankato? It sounded like the CC/UNO game was a good one.

Why does Budish always look around the rink and at refs everytime he scores? It's like he is not sure it's a good goal everytime... Anyone notice? I never seen him do it when he played for Edina.

I hope the Beavers can show themselves more tonight, it's a fun series for me to watch.

Gophs about to complete the sweep and looking pretty good doing it... hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Quack-I thought you were a Gopher fan?

Yes, I did not say I wanted Bemidji to win...would have liked them to give Gophers a tighter game. I grew up in Bemidji and know they can play better than that but they are obviously out-talented by the Gophers. Beavers didn't look good on big ice this weekend.

How much smaller of a rink do the Beavers play on?

Went the game tonight. Been a while since I saw them live.

I wouldnt say the gophers totally dominated. They played better for sure, but the Beavs gave them some heat and that game could have been a lot closer on the scoreboard.

I was hoping for Bjugstad to have a big game but he didnt do much of anything. Rau didnt add much either....

They must have heard you. Top to bottom the Gopher forwards are very good this year, I can't find much to complain about.

Looked like the Don tried to change the way the Gophs play with a lead. I did not like it at all. the Beavs had a lot of chances in the 3rd and should have scored a goal if they would have gotten a bounce. Gophs went frm totally dominating to playing in a shell in the 3rd and I think it backfires against a better team. We lost 1 lead this year, no reason to change your normal 3rd period.

So last night I got what I asked for, the 2nd actually did something, however the 1st line didnt do much. Get those lines clicking on the same night and we will be playing in April. I saw Marshal left hurt, and I think we get Larson back soon.

Some odd scores in league last night. Crazy how you can blow a team out and loose the next night.

Looks like a log jam for 4th 5th and 6th.

Brooks, I will enjoy you cheering for the Gophs next weekend.

For some teams it doesnt matter the size of the rink, for Beaves it looked like it killed their game. They dont have a lot of skill but they have the best coaching in the league.....the only problem is they are coached to play strategically on the pro rink.

35 shots for the series. Nice effort. Probably a few high scool squads that could match those numbers.

Didn't UND split with the Beaves this year? laugh

Yeah, but they were QUALITY shots .... grin

Now we just have to ride Patterson, Bugstad and Rau to the promise land.... smile

I think people would be surprised how Bemidji is finally becoming a hockey town. It was always so odd that they were terrible in youth and highschool, being by far bigger then the other schools. Maybe some of the Thugs are gone and now people are playing hockey. I lived there for 5 years and the natives were not exactly outstanding citizens.

That rink will be the most hostile environment to play in soon.

I will be cheering for the Gopher too beat UNO alright. Along UMD since there playing CC. UND needs a split down in Denver. I'm not even all that concern with how they finish in the WCHA standings. I'm more wrap up in the pairwise so they can move on after the Final Five. UND needs three more wins to be safe for that tourney. eek

But then I wouldn't get to point out that not only did the Beavs pick up a W against the mighty Sioux this year they also shut them out. Pretty good for a high school team. grin

Remaining schedules:

UM @ Omaha

CC @ UMD

UND @ DU

Wis @ UM

UMD @ SCSU

DU @ UNO

Mank @ UND

I think the Gophers take the Cup rather easily now. They aren't leaving points behind for the teams chasing them. Denver has a tough pair of matchups, as does Duluth.

I'd be happy with Duluth getting #2 seed for the tourney (assuming they win the home ice). Playing 3 before NCAA's is tough.

Terrible? In what years? I would have to disagree with you...it depends what years you are talking about. But Bemidji Bantams, Peewees have made it to State Tourneys and winning a couple VFW Bantam States that I can remember, I played on the 2000 VFW State team part of the year and also played at the MAHA state too. BHS went to a couple state tourneys with Pelawa but it's been a while. HS last year had a pretty good year but did not get much competition however these guys went to state in Peewees and Bantams. BSU has gotten much more fun to watch since they became D-1, more skilled, passing, hard working group of guys.

Bemidji has had good youth hockey but then going into HS, it was different...I can name a few reasons but will keep it to myself.

Good luck with a split down in Denver.... I know they lost to sconny last week, but they are healthy now and very good at home in the altitude. Their starting to look like the team that was picked to win the WCHA preseason- as the gophs found out last week.

Hate to say this but I agree. Regardless of whether UND advances to the NCAA the team exceeeded my expectations given all there injuries loss of underclassmen and not to mention all the Sr they had to replace from last year. UND's fourth line is all walk on from what I read(Taylor Dickens so is a walk from last year). They have D men that are double shifting, its tough to win down the stretch doing that. If they manage to make it through the Final Five after all that it will be a miracle. There probably the hardest working UND team that I can remember.

But probably the biggest surprise for me this year is Wisconsin. What happen to that team?

No kidding, they have a few studs in their lineup but just can't seem to get anythign going aside from a few quality wins here or there. Hopefully by the time the gophs get them they don't have much fight left.

Kudos for doing this. I'm sure a lot of fishermen would not have.

I know it has been raining all week but anyone have any walleye reports?  Heading up for the holiday weekend and want to do some fishing.

Partyonpine, Would you be willing to share in what areas you were getting some nice Bluegills?  I am on the east end on big bay and would like to find some good panfish.

Opener and the week after were good.  Not the numbers we normally get but better quality in the East End.  Not surprised on the weights for the Auto City a.  Usually for us we only catch a few slot fish but we averaged 3 a day for 10 days.  2 overs, biggest 27 inches.     Our best luck was 12-16 feet for quality.  When we went deeper we caught more but smaller.  Bass were really starting to heat up.  For me little earlier than normal.  Found some nice Bluegills the day we went after some panfish.  Dock fishing was as many as we wanted per usual.

We will be up on June 8th for the week. It will be our 13th year in a row staying on the lake.  I hope the walleye are hitting the bobbers by the time that we get there.

Those are some fine specimens. Great job

I'm quite shocked to hear that a walleye tournament is still doing a live weigh in.  Virtually every event these days around here is doing a catch, photo, and release format.   Regardless, nice work.  Congrats.

On the south end...   A great week of fishing with walleyes and saugers caught in good numbers.   The go-to presentation, again, was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 17 - 21' of water.  Various schools of walleyes and saugers across the south shore.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.   Some big pike and jumbo perch being caught by walleye anglers. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers normally head to the lake.  12 - 15' of water is holding some nice fish.   Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes being caught along with a mixed bag.  12 - 25 feet of water.  Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water were holding good fish this week.    The go-to presentation was a jig and minnow as on the south shore.  A mixed bag as is common around the Angle.

Nice work!   Here's two words you hardly ever hear anyone say anymore.  "grateful and humbled"

RLG, thanks for the shout-out!     Jeff and I are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened this past weekend.  We are humbled and full of gratitude  for having won 'The Classic' for a second time.     We practiced through all the rain on Thurs and the wind on Friday and found six different spots holding big fish.  Fishing was good on both days with several 'overs' in our catch...but would it hold up for another day?   We didn't know.     On tourney day, we made a long run to our first spot where I lucked out on a 26.5"er on my second cast.  Jeff followed up with a thick 27" er a few minutes later, which turned out to be the big fish for the event at 7.26lbs.  We finished out our limit and weighed-in at 10:30 am for the welfare of the fish in our livewell.    There were some big weights in this event which would have won in most other years, but - for whatever reason - this was our day.  Everything just went our way.  Again, we are just super grateful and humbled by this success.  We also want to congratulate all the other anglers who did well and give a big 'thank you' to the tournament organizers who put on such a great event!
