Camping and Fishing?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for ideas, where to camp and have decent fishing near by?

We've never camped and I'd like to get my kids on some fish. Thinking about planning a trip for the middle June, after school gets out.

Thanks in advance.

i always recommend bearhead state park. its up in ely but worth the travel for one week. mid june is also when my family goes. always seems to be the best fishing. nice sites, showers , bike trails, beach, fish cleaning house, boat, canoe rental and great fishing. walleys, panfish, pike and bass. city of tower and ely nearby and a casino if you feel lucky. two trout lakes for shore fishing within the park. good luck.

It would depend on what you want to fish for and if you want to be on a lake or river. if camping along a river is a option for you I would recommend Shakopee RV Park & Campground. they have campsites right on the river(Minnesota River). Their staff is friendly and the prices are not bad. check out their website if you get a chance.

Depending on what you're looking for as far as fishing goes, SE Minnesota near Lanesboro offers some phenonmenal camping and trout fishing opportunities. Beautiful scenery, great fishing, and lots of stuff to do. Canoeing/kayaking, swimming, fishing, biking, shopping and lots more. Mystery Cave SP or the Lanesboro park would be two options you could look at.

Thanks Guys.

I'd like to take'em up north. What we catch doesn't really matter, but good action does. I want my kids to catch fish.

reinhard, Do they play poker at the casino up there?

Besure to check out Itasca State Park.

Headwaters of the Mississippi.

IMO ... a very good choice for a family.

Especially if they haven't done alot of camping.

Lots of amenities close at hand, but still camping.

Plenty of choices after you've arrived.

I believe it's our oldest State Park, I'd consider it the flagship.

You won't be disappointed.

i realy dont know that. black jack for sure. i just play the mashines once in awhile. if you haven't camped much, a state park like bearhead is a great place to start. i used to camp with my wife and kids in remote or rustic campgrounds and many times on islands. when a friend of mine tole me about bearhead i said state parks dont apeal to me. in my mind, lots of people, noise, poor fishing.

man was i wrong. my first year there i took all three of my vactions there for a week at a time. i have gone in early june, mid june, and august. mid june over the years turned out the best. plenty of panfish for the kids, right off shore if you want and they also have a fishing pier by the boat landing.

if you need any advice while you are there, i'm sure some other camper would give you help or the staff at the ranger station. they have ice, firewood, and rental equipment also. it's nice to have ely and tower nearby if you need groceries or whatever. you can pick out your site and pre-pay before you go. electric or regular. the showers are a big hit for all. individual stalls with sinks, vanities, toilets. they kept clean daily. drinking water is always near by. bearhead is also one of the most scenic of the state parks with it's big pines and islands. it is a favorite place for birdwatchers also. by the beach there is a large eagles nest where people go to watch the young eagles grow. good luck.
