Heck, then you could go to Frazier Bay or even Big Bay if you wanted to. That's outside my bailiwick, however.

There is decent bass and northern fishing in your bay. Lots of weeds and a beaver dammm across the bay from your dock. Lots of pan fish in Black Bay as well so bring crawlers for those. I've pulled an outcast walleye or two from Black Bay in the fall but it's rare. As said, you'll need to travel out to other parts for the walleye.

Stop in one of the local bait shops to get a hotspots map. I'll be up there this weekend and have a few extras if you need. Look for a red Alumacraft at a dock on the south side of Black Bay and stop by if you see me. I'll grab one for you

Lakemaster has a paper map as well. Moosebirds sells them

The lakemaster paper map is the best one available for Vermilion, it may cost a few dollars more, but it's well worth it.

My wife finally got a week off the first full week in Oct. My question is will that be too late for good fishing? Read somewhere where your water temps are already in the low 50s. Any thoughts? Is it worth the trek from Illinois?

Thanks

Posted

A guy would go broke betting on fishing a couple weeks in advance but I can tell you I will make the trip. I had to go south this week and look forward to getting back in October. Where else would you go for a week of fishing? Water temps aren't that low yet. Fishing has been good all fall and last week I just started to find a few in traditional fall spots. I'll be there even if its snowing.

Late October is probably some of the best walleye fishing of the year!

They will be concentrated in the deeper holes and they will be hungry!

Water temps will probably be in the upper 40's by then.

Wear plenty of warm clothing and you will stay comfortable on most days and you will have a great fishing trip!

Anyone remember and old resort that my parents used to go to in the 70s. They think it was in Wakemup Bay. Maybe Wakemup Bay Resort?

Thanks

Posted

Probably was Naughtons Wa-kem-up Bay Resort.

Posted

That sounds right. Thanks JK.

Posted

Yep, went there many times. Liked it so well we bought one of the cabins.

There was another resort that sold out, used to be called Red Loon. Not sure what it was before that. Voss became White Eagle.

Posted

Pretty sure Red Loon was called Chaps Lodge back in the day.

Before my time.

Kind of hate to ask this question, but here goes......what is the average first-fishable ice on Vermilion? Be nice to me!!! Just thinking down the road:)

Posted

I always said thanksgiving day.. But I Would add a week to that and you should be pretty close

Posted

Hard to give you a set date of course on that question but I have been able to walk out on Thanksgiving day a few times in the past.

I would say a general safe date would be around Dec., 10.

Cliff

Posted

I would say around the 10th like Cliff said. I caught a Muskie on the 26th last year of november...Open water. It just depends year to year.

We usually find fishable water down here near the cities by Dec 10th-depending on year. One thing I'll bet, it will be between Thanksgiving and Dec 10:) Last year was a wierd year, for sure.

Help me out on this. When guys talk about netting whitefish on vermilion are they Whitefish or Cisco? Does Vermilion have both types of these fish?

Posted

Whitefish No cisco here that I have ever seen

Posted

What confuses me is the DNR test nets state Cisco not whitefish. Cisco/tullibee, Whitefish. It seems when most people talk about these fish they group them as the same species?

Posted

Tulibee aka cisco

white fish

jkrash are you saying both fish came out of vermilion.Cisco, Whitefish?

Because I think I have seen both types in vermilion.

Posted

Yes

Vermilion has both

Posted

Jkrash,

Great pictures!

Guess I was thinking that cisco were similiar to tulibee but smaller. Guy learns something new all the time.

Posted

Would The east end of Vermilion have a larger population of whitefish than Cisco?

Would the west end of vermilion have a larger population of Cisco than whitefish?

Anyone know?

My belief also as the ciscos that we use for trout are certainly a different strain then a Tulibee! But I guess they are both lumped into the cisco family.

With everybody patiently waiting for ice-out on Vermilion, I thought it would be interesting to have an ice-out contest for our small lake located half way between Duluth and Lake Vermilion.  We are on a 150 acre lake with a maximum depth of 11 feet.  One week ago I took my last snowmobile ride around the lake, and two days later I took my last walk around it.  On the day I last walked around the lake, the ice thickness was 10 inches at 100 yards out.  The picture below was from yesterday, Tuesday, April 15th.  Winner wins a raffle ticket for our volunteer fire department cash raffle.   In future years, our ice out date may help me predict when the ice will go out on Vermilion.

Went up to the Rainy for the last day of catch and release walleye. Rough weather. I could find walleye but they didn't cooperate. Only got one walleye 2 pike and a dinosaur on walleye tackle. 81 minute fight. 58", figured around 45 lbsIMG_9579.HEICIMG_9579.HEIC

On the South Shore...  For the vast majority of anglers, ice fishing is over for the year, and what a great year it was.  You may hear of a few hardcore ice guides still gaining access in places targeting pike, but overall, we will now start watching for open holes appearing in the ice, the Rainy River making its presence known outside the Lighthouse Gap and satellite images from clear days showing progress up until the MN Fishing Opener.     The spring walleye season is complete as of April 14th.  As far as the lake goes, the focus now is pike up until the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 10th.     Ditches are running and soon bays will pop open enabling anglers to target huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays.   Some anglers will use dead bait much like they do on a tip up.  Others will cast spoons or troll crankbaits.  Pike fishing in the back secluded bays along the south shore of Lake of the Woods offers a unique fishing opportunity you don't need a big boat for and it can produce trophy sized pike.   The limit of pike on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods is a daily limit of 3, with all pike 30 - 40 inches having to be released.  An angler is allowed one trophy pike over 40 inches per day.  Some anglers choose to get measurements, take some pictures, release the fish and get a graphite mount.  All good options. On the Rainy River...  The spring walleye season is in the books!  Overall, big numbers of walleyes caught and released on the Rainy River (along with some absolute giants).  Thank you to all who traveled up, had patience with some long lines, helped out others and shared in this spring tradition of catching walleyes (and sturgeon).    A sincere thank you to all who help this spring tradition happen behind the scenes.  Koochiching County did a great job clearing ice from the boat ramps on the river as soon as possible.  Many agencies work together to make this tradition safe, respectful and enjoyable.  Again, thank you.   The Wheeler's Point boat ramp at the mouth of the Rainy River located 12 miles north of Baudette is open.  Thank you to a number of resort owners combined with some visitors in boats working together to drill holes, make waves, and coax the last remaining stubborn ice away from the ramp.  It is teamwork like this that makes the resort / fishing community in these parts special.   Initial reports for sturgeon are excellent.  Good numbers being caught and released.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an 18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Local resorts and bait shops have all the equipment you need.     Sturgeon fishing is open through May 15th.  Here are the specific seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  With many areas of open water showing up along with some heaves and cracks, travel on the ice up at the Angle is pretty much finished up.  You may see a local in an airboat which can traverse over both ice and open water delivering mail to the Oak Island post office or bringing supplies to a resort, but the watch for open water is on.   For now, folks will be fishing pike and sturgeon and paying attention to aerial images of open water and ice out on the lake until the MN Fishing Opener on May 10th.  Time to make plans!  For more information on spring and summer fishing, visit fishingminnesota.com.

If you do ever get ahold of him. Also suggest he make sure his battery is fully charged. If it's been sitting unused all winter, it might have enough to light it up but not run it so it shuts off.   Also, let us know what he does find out if he gets it fixed it might help someone else. 👍

Thank you very much for your feedback Leech and Kettle. Very tough for me to help the neighbor when he doesn't respond to my messages.    Oh well, but thanks again for your help.
