I have had ATT for about 10 years, but they are not very cooperative this time for my renewal, in fact they really got me mad. I'm wondering if any of you have Verizon from the cities and get good signals on the lake. ATT does a good job with their towers and I'd hate to kiss them off, only to find the other company doesn't work as well. Any input will be appreciated....Kaz

Kaz,
I have Verizon and have never had a problem with Reception up there. ATT has the best coverage in my book my dad has verizion and i beat'em up at the lake.

I have had good results with ATT in the NW Angle.
I got sporadic results in the Sunset Channel in 1999. Perhaps coverage has been improved since then.
I got no coverage in Sabaskong Bay/Crow Lake at all last March.

I have a Verizon phone and it got full reception out in the Morris Point area no problem last winter. Granted I only checked it to see how the service was then turned that noise racket off for the weekend. I have to listen to that thing ring all week long and when I'm in the walleye groove up there, I don't want my attention anywhere else. Plus we were too busy pulling up the eyes last time to even think about picking up a phone. We couldn't even eat breakfast in our sleeper until around noon because it was just non-stop action from 7:00 am on.
Good luck and wait for the ice!

ATT has given me the best signal. I have T-mobile now (Hows the reception). Nextel sucks. and sprint sucked last year. Last year I was the only person that even had a signal,on the S shore. MG_ Did you go out of morris point lodge? How was it? Were you in a sleeper?
[This message has been edited by WhaTT! (edited 11-18-2003).]

I've had Verizon for 3 years and it works great. I had to use my phone a lot one winter and even though it said "roam" I have never been charged $.01 for roaming, ever.
Every year the service improves, to a point where Verizon doesn't have any roaming anywhere in MN now. That wasn't the case 2 years ago....
I had reception way out on Rainy Lake too!
I gave up ATT over 3 years ago when they kept BSing me to a point of no return...

Verizon has always worked well for me in the Angle area. Signal strength is very good until you get north of Windigo Island...

Thanks for the Info. I think I'll ride my contract out until April and then see what kind of deal I can cut with Verzion. If the service is good, then I think I'll switch.....Kaz

Kaz I can tell you that sprint dont work at all there...Last year i got a at&t phone just for up north. but in jan. when my contract is up im going with verizon..
Verizon has merged with sprint (kinda) sprint has all there sattelites and verizon has all of thers plus all of sprints..witch kinda makes verizon pretty powerfull now...
BRING ON THE ICE!!
WhaTT! -
Just an FYI on the T-Mobile phone, it works great down here in the cities, but not a chance that it will work up there. So you might want to have someone with that has a Verizon phone or borrow one for the weekend in case of troubles. To answer your questions, last year we stayed with Ballard's and they did a great job from the second we walked in to the time we left. I was overly impressed by everything, the service, prices, sleeper house, and of course the fish were there in full force. The guys would come out and check on us 4 times a day or so and were always extremely nice and helpful too. If I'm going up to LOTW to be in a sleeper that's where I'll be w/o any questions asked. But this year I'm bringing my Dad up and one of his buddies so I thought we'd get a day house and go into the lodge and crash there in a cabin. So this year we're going to Morris Point Lodge for 3 nights right after X-Mas (thanks again for the referral Fisky). They do not have sleepers there either. When I'm going up w/ just my buddies we always do a sleeper, but this time it might just be easier to do the day house thing and come in for a nice meal and some drinks in the lounge. I would assume that Morris Point is a first class resort since it came so highly recommended by Fisky. I am really looking forward to getting up there again and hope the fish are cooperative again so my old man will have a great first impression of LOTW. After my first trip up there it was no questions asked, I'm hooked. That is by far my first choice for any fishery here in MN. I'll report back to you guys on how Morris Point was after X-Mas (I'll be up there 12/26-12/29).
Still waiting for the ice....come on!

I used to have AT&T, it worked ok out on the lake, but anywhere else it sucked. Have cellone now and it is much better, especcially custumer service, I don't know how many hours I wasted arguing with AT&T over their screw ups.

Im in Duluth and have cell 1. Its ok all the way to Red Lake and then I lose everything until about 15 miles south of Baudette. On the lake Im fine. Nothing at all on Red Lake. Does anyone get reception all over those areas?

I have Verizon and I get a signal on Rainy and LOW its better on the water also last winter up in Ears Falls Ont. I was able to call home I picked up a tower from Superior Wis. usually up north you pick up a Canadian tower. Bob

There are not any towers between Red Lake and 15 miles of Baudette. East of Clementson there is not any signal either with most phones.

I have cell 2000 out of St Cloud I have not had a problem calling St Cloud from LOW. I also have Onstar Backup on my new vehicle just in case. I have more problems calling St Cloud from 40 miles NW of here than I do all the way up there. Good luck and hang on. Bill

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
