Rangers are Shopping Young

Do you think he would be a good fit for the Twins if they can get him for the right price? I have not seen anything as to what the Rangers are looking for compensaion but I would guess they want a couple of draft picks and bench player.

I think we have our 3rd baseman of the future here now. The 48 mill young will get over the next three years is definetly a stumbling block for most teams, including the Twins.

I do not believe Delmon is worth that kind of coin. I guess the pay will depend on how many teams are interested in him.

The original poster is refering to 'Michael Young' who is currently with the Rangers.....and recently asked that he be traded.

True but he has also played the other 3 positions in the infeild, and the twins do not have a proven reliable option up the middle and a right handed hitter with some power to put between all of the lefties.

He would be an upgrade offensively. I just wouldn;t want us to pay the price tag in players even if the Ranger's picked up half the owed salary.

6 time AS, All Time TX Rangers hit leader, GG winner, former AL batting champ, and Minnesota is one of the 6 teams he would play for- the rest of MLB is on a 'no trade' list he has. Who wouldn't want him? Thome has maybe a year left in the tank, and You could more than likely fill Puntos shoes and we could probably get 3/4ths of a season in the IF out of him. As for his salary, once the Rangers trade him, they still have to put up some of that money- it won't rest on the shoulders of the Twins.

I agree. Regardless of his age, he is someone the Twins should at least take a hard look at.

Rangers are still eating some of ARods unbelievable contract, they would have to do the same here. Look, Casillas not the answer and if we can get a guy in here with Youngs stats, go for it. We whiffed on Lee last year, and the Rangers rode him into the WS. This could be a huge piece of the puzzle to get us there as well

I always find it funny that "fans" dont want to add a good player because it may cost alot of money. Do the people who are against young realize that "they" are not the ones who are paying the salary. Its billionare owners who shell out the cash. The debate shouldnt be wether we should, as fans, want young here, because anyone who knows even an ounce about baseball would want a player like that on their team. The debate should be wether we think the twins org will get him.

I dont think they will get young because the twins dont want to put a championship team together. They are happy with mediocrity, just like a paying majority of the fans.

I disagree with that statement entirely for the following reasons:

  • The Twins organization has been a competitive team every year since talk of contraction
  • The Twins are in a small market, thus, shelling out for a $200 million payroll isn't realistic as at the end of the day they are still in the business to make money. However, with their $100 million payroll, they have some of the best and brightest young talent in the game
  • If they were okay with mediocrity, they would have stayed in the god-forsaken Metrodome instead of building the new stadium.

But, where most Twins fans see the owners desire to stay a "mediocre" team as it was stated is the fact we never add or go after free agents that could get us over the hump and past the first round of the playoffs and possibly into a WS.

The Twins are not in a small market anymore...they just aren't in one of the BIG, BIG markets.

so true. that "small market" label is no longer applicable to this team.

i think everyone wants to see young here but the rangers probably want top prospects and who knows what they will pay of his salary, be a good addition to the team but its just not gonna happen

We have to get past giving up prospects for a potential trip to the WS. Has cost us way too much in the past and we do have one of the best farm systems in ML, we'll always recover from trades

Wrong. I am happy with seeing a competitive club year after year, instead of what the vikes did. One and done, we will make another serious run in 2016.

Getting MYoung would cripple us like a herschel walker.

Not my point. We have a VERY successful farm club- a few picks will not hurt us. Top prospects in the minors does not always equal success in the majors. If you can get a proven guy for some minor leaguers- you do it

michael young is 34 and is a middle infielder who is signed thru 2013 at 16 million/year. just taking on his salary without trading any prospects would be bad. trading prospects for him and his salary would be worse. even if the rangers were to eat half of that 16 million/year, it still wouldn't be worth it.

his production is going to diminish and his range will fall apart. we don't need a third baseman. so there is absolutely no reason for us to be interested in him.

i feel bad for the gm that pulls the trigger on getting him.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can he play 1st? We could dump sissy boy Mourneau and put Young there smile

This is turning into a very relevant question right now...honestly, can he play 1st?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
