Mille Lacs Tullibees,

Is that how many tullibees you kept or caught??? It better not have been kept because the limit is just 10 per person and you would have been just a bit over your limit. wink

I think most people are pretty aware of the law up there. We were stopped by a CO coming off the lake so they ARE checking. I talked to a couple guys that caught over 100, and we almost got to that number. We did keep a limit for smoking/eating.

As far as the "non" gamefish. That is usually how I roll. smile If it fights and it's fun, you have my attention. LOL

Everyone I spoke with this weekend had found some, with reports of hundreds being caught.

Yep, all the info you need is right here in this thread already. wink

Thats great to hear, Shack!! Be nice to keep the tullibees around for more than a winter but all it will take is one warm summer and they will be gone. Anyway good to hear the wardens are keeping a real close eye on the situation...they AREN'T STUPID!!

My reports are always total caught unless otherwise noted. If you read back, I have stated multiple times how I am very happy with the 10 fish limit, I have no need for more than a smoker full at a time.

BTW, You from LF? If so when did you graduate? I was born and raised there, just left college and still call the area home.

Saturday's bite was very strange. Everyone in our group caught fish up to about noon. Slowed down a bit til maybe 2:00 or so, but still everyone was able to get fish. Then, right about the time Shack pulled up with his posse, I hit the skunk train. For some reason, only Dtro caught fish after that. Must have been a solid 2-3 hours of us looking at fish on the flasher, while the only one reeling them in was Darren. I drilled a hole about 3 feet from his and put my jig down there. Nothing. Heck I even tried the ol-Hanson for a couple minutes while he was unhooking something... Nothing. Couldn't get em to bite my jig. He outfished everyone else 2 or 3 to one that day by the time the fishless afternoon is taken into consideration. If the rest of us had held up our end of the fishing, we'd have seen some BIG numbers.

The funny thing was the number of holes Darren fished. One. The whole day. He did turn a bit with the sun -- something about getting an even tan I think. It probably wasn't due to the glare on the flasher.

I was thinking about pickling a few. Anyone try it or have a good recipe?

I bet you could look up Pickled Herring, basically the same thing.

I cut the head off and split them down the back. That way they lay open better when smoking.
So is it basiclly split in half?

I smoke a lot of meats and this is one of my favorites! If you don't try this, you're missing out...

I just gut them, clean out the blood pocket by their spine, put them in a tub with a brine mix for 18-24 hours. Then I rinse 'em, smoke 'em, package 'em, and freeze 'em.

Brine:

1 cup canning salt

1 cup sugar

1 gallon cold water

Boil a couple cups of the water with the salt and sugar to disolve, then mix the concentrate with the rest of the cold water. Then put them somewhere cool, like the garage or frig.

Depending on the amount of fish, you may need to double the brine recipe.

Enjoy!!

I split them along the backbone so they fan open so I can hang them or lay them on the racks in the smoker. If you split them up the belly they dont lay open.

Here is a simple and good recipe

Layer fish in plastic bucket

Mix cold water and canning salt together till an egg floats

Pour over fish and let sit for 24 hours in cool place

Rinse with cold water

Rub each fish with brown sugar and let sit for 24 hours in cool place

Smoke till done

When I have smoked fish I hang and use tooth picks to open. When the fish is eaten it is in the form of the way you eat jerky. Here ya go and pick off style. To add to the above recipes I will throw in some brown sugar in the water pan if I am using it to control the temps in my 2'x2'x4' propane. It can get messy so when I pre-soaked my hickory or maple I put the brown sugar in the soak mixture. You put in the extra "love" when smoking tullie, the after effects are awesome. Especially for an afternoon snack out on the ice. Then again after a morning on the ice even headcheese tastes like apple pie. laugh

Did the storm cause any reaction to the tullibees? Will be out Friday and just wanted to know if tullies are still hot and heavy or has the action die down.

Also, how is the ice??
