Late in the day til about 7-7:30 Deep water you can still get a bunch of sunnies. The crappies slowed down in my regular spot though lately.

I did well at Bartlett Lake/airport lake this morning. I had to wait a few minutes between each fish I marked, and had to be patient when they showed up, but I came away with ten nice bluegills. A guy fishing near me caught a 16" largemouth.

It helped that I was fishing both lines for sunfish. I pulled up to the baitshop at 7:00, but they were closed, and I didn't feel like waiting there, or driving to the hardware store, just to buy sucker minnows that don't work near as well as shiners, so I just headed out on the ice without tip-ups.

There was close to two feet of ice out where I was fishing. Due to the snow I couldn't see what the ice at the landing was like, but shoreline ice is always the first to go bad, especially when people are driving over it, so I didn't think about driving out there.

Caught six crappie yesterday on the big lake, two of them coming in at 11" and 11.5".

I would put up some pictures but it won't let me add it.. any suggestions?

At the bottom of the page where you can quick reply you should see a button down there that looks like a picture. When you hover your mouse over it it says enter an image. Click that and navigate your laptop towards the image of your choice.

I was out on one of the back waters around latch, got to use a gas auger for the first time (I fell in love immediately). I couldn't buy a bite. As it was getting dark we decided to leave but one kid stopped and drilled one more hole and pulled out a 13 inch crappie. As we were already in the truck just watching him we kept going. I finally went on a snowmobile for the first time too! Quite a good day even without catching fish.

Eye hunter, do you always go out to Bartlett?

I ice-fish Bartlett more often than any other water around Winona when I am up there.

I know Bartlett quite well from when I lived in Winona and it was the hotspot in the winter, so I guess I keep fishing it out of habit. laugh

I still hit the ice below the Spillway, or below the lock and dam when it is fishable.

I used to fish Schneider Lake off Hwy. 61 north of Winona, Sam Gordy Slough, Blackbird Slough, and McNally Landing, but for various reasons I haven't hit any of those spots in a few years now.

I don't fish Lake Winona because I am not familiar with it. In the 1990s there was no point to fishing the lake unless you were after largemouth, and now when it is a better fishery I am not in the area enough to take the time to get to know it.

Bartlett or Lake Winona? Which should I hit after work tomorrow? I'd try in Roch but it's supposed to be a little warmer in Winona.

Thanks for the response. I didn't load everything up befor work so Winona it will be. I don't feel like that long of a walk and trying a new spot by myself.

if you like to bust your behind dragging a sled to catch stunted pannies it is a great time especially if you have kids. please keep as many as you can so it will become a better fishery in 5 years.

Bartlett treated me to a flasher full of fish from 4:30 to 9 with only 5 biters. 4 5 inch Crappies and a sunny. All lookers. I threw everything I had at them.

I think the better bet would be through a couple 1000 pike in the lake and let them have a feeding frenzy.. 5years you'll have monster pike and bigger sunnies

There are a good number of pike in Winona already. There are some big guys out there too. But please don't toss any new ones into the lake please.

Rooz there are bigger fish in there. Just have to find the spots. Yes there are a million babys too but if you are in the right spot you can get them.

Riverrat what is game haven? Is that a boy scout camp (I googled it). Is that private or public? AKA can I hop in the car and fish it?

i guess i should have made myself clearer. as i was referring to gamehaven/boyscout lake in my post. there are thousands of tiny pannies in there and i have read that the DNR is stocking pike in there this year to help clean it up.

Rooz is it open to the public?

Has anyone been out to Bartlett in the past few days? Im going to head out there tomorrow for a bit after classes and before the girl gets in from the cities!

you do not want to waste your time there. i do not know the winona area very well but i can't imagine it is any worse than gamehaven. in 4 or so years it may become a good ice fishing lake. there are some big bass in there for the open water season but non the less it is a stunted fishery that will need time to recover.

Sometimes you need to "bust your behind" getting to the fish or finding them. You'll need to do some sorting but that's why they call it fishing and not catching.

I fished for about three hours this afternoon at Bartlett Lake, and did alright, taking home seven 7-8" bluegills, and a crappie. I also threw back a few smaller bluegills. No luck on the tip-up.

The panfish I caught tended to be picky, with a lot of looking before taking the bait, if they took the bait. I was hoping it would get better in the "golden hour" before sunrise, but the bite pretty much stopped then.

There was probably 18" of pretty good ice where I was sitting, although it was a bit soft. There was some serious mush right off the landing, so if anyone is still thinking of driving out there I would not recommend it.

Got out and shore fished tonight with my buddy, caught your average bluegill, smaller bass and about a 4lb bass that hit my half a worm near the East lake landing. Does anyone know if there are any better areas for crappies near shore as I don't have a boat?

Good luck, get out and enjoy the outdoors.

I got out again today from about 4-6pm... Spent most of my time on the West lake.. now that the city removed all the brush from around the lakes there are a lot more spots to check out.. ended up with a couple tiny gills in the 4-5" range.. and 1 bass on the East lake.. think the storm front sent them back out a little bit because where they were yesterday.. they were nowhere to be found today... plus they were hitting ever so lightly had to add an indicator to my leader to even see the most subtle of hits

@Walter.. sorry wish i could help you out.. been searching for them myself.. I know the West End dock usually holds them and so does the dock by the hospital.. but I'm not seeing the docks loaded up with people yet.. So I'm guessing they haven't really moved in yet?

Btw.. if anyone is interested.. I contacted the Lake City Fisheries Dept. and got an updated depth chart of Lake Winona... It was surveyed by St. Mary's in 2006

Thanks for posting that post-dredge map of Lake Winona.

I'm heading up to SE MN next week to pick morels, but I'm probably hauling my boat up too. Normally I'd fish the river but that looks pretty much un-fishable.

So, I'm maybe going to fish Lake Winona, and see what I can find.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
