Lodging with dogs?

Recommended Posts

My wife is out of town for the week and I'm contemplating a last minute solo maiden voyage to Lake of the Woods. I've got 2 well behaved German shorthairs that will be with me and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a place to stay thats allows dogs. I'm planning on heading up after work on Friday, Fishing dusk to dawn Saturday, maybe a little fishing Sunday morning and then driving home. I've got a portable, gps maps and all my equipment so I figured I would just pay a tresspass and drive the truck out during the day to fish. I figured I'd hit the local bait shop up for info on where I might fish. I'm also wondering how bad an idea it is fish this lake by myself for the first time.

I've stayed with my dog at both the Lakeroad lodge & the Royal Dutchman. The Dutchman isn't open this winter, however I'd guess that most of the places in the area will allow a dog being that the vast majority of customers are sportsmen.

Week-ends get busy up there, so you better get on the phone to see what is available yet. As far as by yourself? I don't think that is a bad idea....I've seen individual guys setting up portables a few times while we were up there.....MOST guys are pretty helpfull in case of emergencies, but your dogs won't be much help figureing out the hot bite of that day, or help you land that monster. grin

Where you bye the road pass will be helpfull with tips, usually also, if you get bait a different place. Hot pink/red, chartreuse, white, and glow are necesities. If all you are getting is "lookers", try downsizing with a minnowhead, 2-3 inches off bottom, with a spring bobber and don't move it til you see the spring moving......that is the ONLY rod I caught anything on a week ago. Of course the bite MAY be agressive when you are there....in that case, jig, jig, jig.

Where are you going from?

Don't want to discourage you.....fyi, 6 hour drive from there depending on where you go. We have a favorite stop, for a break, in Blackduck.....baitshop/gas/food.

6 hr drive is fine for me. I drove 7 hours each way with my 3 year old in the truck last weekend just to see the new nephew. This will be a solo trip so no problem.

Go for it, and good luck to you.

I don't know if you are monitoring reports or not, but......Lindy Tackle site has some really good ones about twice a week. Top of page click on "audio reports" ,then" Minnesota", then scroll down to the report you want for the lake you are going to.
