Spring Valley Ponds

Recommended Posts

This topic comes up on here from time to time--I am guessing you are referring to the old iron ore pits down around Cherry Grove, or the one along Hwy 63.

Most, if not all of them, are on private ground, so it is up to the landowner as to whether you can fish them.

There are three old pits close together a mile or so west of Cherry Grove whose owner let the public fish them; these are the ones just east across the road from the private golf course (which also has an old pit that was always off-limits to the public). I ice-fished those three a few times in the '90s, and caught pretty much what I caught in the summer: a few nice bass, an occasional crappie, and a lot of very small bluegills.

Whether those ponds are still open to the public, and what other ones may be, I do not know. I have fallen out of the loop on those pits.

I think CrappieKing has it right. I'm talking the ponds East a couple miles and a little south of the golf course. They are a mile or two east of 63. There's at least 3 or 4 on the state land that I've fished w/ fly rod in the spring, never summer (I hate ticks and they don't spray). While deer hunting out there WAY in the back end of the state land there's a rather large pond, more like a swamp area, but a pond in the middle of it that I could get out to, that I could see some rather large sunnies in the water. I know on the fly rod, I couldn't keep the warmouths off the hook. I was just wondering if anyone ever sets tip ups out for northerns out there. I know there are some large ones in these ponds.

The ponds I'm talking about are maybe a mile south of the pits that are private owned, they are all on the state land so I know they are public.

I have a friend that has three ponds south of the state land. Two of them are close to the gravel and the other is hidden. They are private. The sportsman club has a pond but they are catch and release. If you have a membership or accompanied by a member you can fish there if your not looking for dinner. I live in Grand Meadow but grew up in a couple miles from there. I believe that state ponds still have fish just not sure of current size. Try it out then give us a report.

He must have the ones that are seperated by a small strip of land and I think I saw a john boat in one last year w/ a cabin above them? I think there was a cabin there, I didn't pay much attention. I too grew up in that area, more by Dexter, but when I was younger we would go anywhere from Sp. Valley to Spring Grove. I haven't been trout fishing over there in years though. I may have to check out one of the ponds on a weekend or something when I'm in the area again, and let you guys know how it goes. There used to be 2 good gravel pits just off the freeway west of dexter and just east of the Beaver trails campground(Not Beaver trails anymore), but they have been private and in the last 10 years or so they've been posted, but there used to be 10" - 12" crappies in there, I'm sure that's changed now.

Clasheman - I'd be interested in trying out these ponds on stateland. I have relatives from Riceville and it'd be a good place to meet in between to fish.

If you don't mind would you shoot me a mail and give me directions coming from Rochester on 63? How long of a walk to these ponds, would you suggest packing light?

My email is [email protected]

Thanks,

Fishgutz

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
