Tilt Trim problem

My trim on my 97 Force 75 will go up but not down.What causes this and how do I fix it?I suspect low hydraulic fluid but I see no where it could have leaked out.

i would suspect a switch or valve or motor problem. if it goes up that should mean you have enough oil,but check the level first anyway. after that i take it to a pro.

Thats the same Moter we have on our boat. When you find out what the problem is post back and let us know incase it happens to us some time.

I'm sure this isn't your problem but last year when I was putting our boat in the water I forgot to take off that thing that blocks the moter up off. I felt like an idiot, but it was one of those things that my husband always did and he was'nt there at the time.

I still forget to put the plug in all the time.Can't think of every thing all the time!

Wouldn't you know it the shop I called is stacked up for two weeks.Didn't even give me an Idea of what could be wrong or if I could fix it myself.I was going to go to the Miss today because the MN river is over the banks.Could take my jon but I'm afraid that the current may be too strong for it

There is a way you can get the motor down, there should be a screw on the trim pump it's a by p*** valve that when turned will lower the motor. Does your trim pump run when you try to put it down?

Yes i think that it does.It makes noise anyway and if you push down on it it will go down.It happened last spring also but after working it up and down it freed up.This year its not freeing up.I thought that the piston was just sticky last year,I'm not so sure any more.

What I would do is drain the fluid and replace it with new clean tranny fluid.

Jkrash, since you mentioned tranny fluid I think maybe there is a problem.
I have Mercury and I use 10x40 motor oil, that's what they specify.
I don't know Force, but maybe it's the oil, or it could be the cylinders or both.

10-40 motor oil, that's news to me you must have a newer merc, I've always used tranny fluid on the trim pumps I've messed with. learn something new everyday. sorry about the locator.

Jkrash, no expert here I just read what my manual says (actually 10w40 not 10x40, sorry). Also repair manuals suggest same, and my motors are a 1978 135hp and 1980 140hp. But it's always what works best, if tranny fluid did the job for you for many years, I can guarantee I won't argue with it wink.gif
Have you had a chance to put boat in water yet ? Can't wait here.... grin.gif

It seems that with a long winter like the one we had, the only ones that gets good out of it is sport and tackle shops, becouse we get so pumped up waiting, we go and spend a fortune in things we don't actually need. I just bought myself some new rods, fancy line, gadgets, a VHF radio (yeah on Faribault lakes you need one... wink.gif ) and more. Just to spend more dough..... Then the day after you question yoursef why did I do that......

Did you solve the problem yet, if not have you tried jumping out your solenoids to see if the problem is electrical or not. It would seem to me if the unit goes up but not down that is were the problem is. I had simular problems with a 75 merc and traced my problem to a broken wire I live in Shakopee and could give you a hand if you need it.

Turned out to be a broken seal,busted cylinder cap.I'm going to take it to R&R on monday,to get it rebuilt.Its going to be a long drive,Ilive in Chaska.Any other time it would be a five minute drive.Thanks for the offer of help.

      i cant help you with the weed thing, but i just came back form out that way......Regal, New London Hawick area. i dont no how big the swat of rain was but there is water standing everywhere. my buddy told me they had over 3 inches of rain yesterday/last night

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
