Starting to get ready for next season already so want to get some info for a new portable. Have it narrowed down to another 2 man Fishtrap or similar size Otter. Would like to hear from those who have switched between the two. Have never seen the seats available for the Otter. Are they more/less comfy? Weight ... can I lift it into my truck loaded like I can my Fishtrap? How about the zip door allowing you to bank the house ... how much colder do you think this allows you to fish? I figured with the Fishtrap, 5-10 below either temp or windchill was about max with Focus 5 heater and gas lamp going. Look forward to everyones input.

Hey Bryce, I cannot help you with the kind, only wanted you to know Cabelas in Owatonna has a nice Fishtrap at $ 150. Right at the Bargain Cave entrance.

bryce , i had two fish traps, sold one bought a med. otter. i like that much better the zipper door for banking snow and for running tipups. it pulls great behind the snowmobile and can move quickly. have not thought of a better way for the auger to be tied on. i"m going to buy a small otter too,with two boys, no one wants to be left home mainly me.... the small otter is easer to get into a pickup. i bought folding boat seats and made a rack to fit across the otter for the seat to rest on, a few rod holders and a tray your in great shape i strongly suggest an otter you won"t be sorry hawkeye

Just giving this a little crappie bump to see if I can get everyone out of hibernation. It's either that or not many people have switched between the two. Maybe I should have started off the topic saying I wanted all limits doubled and I'm going to use the new house to catch my limit at least 5 times a week. J/K but it would made a lively topic. Give me a little help here... Fishtrap is the only one that gets any press coverage and I would like to make a truly informed decision.

The first portable that I owned was a Shapell, last year I bought an Otter cabin. It had a few features that I liked better than the Clam series. But every one has their oun particular needs and wants. The seats that Otter uses are basically a plastic framed boat seat. Ive never used one cause I felt they took up too much room in the sled. But a lot of people like them. The weight depends on how much stuff you put in the sled. The Otter sled will hold all of you gear, fish trap wont so if you go to load it in a vehicle the otter is heavier. but all of your gear if in one spot.
I dont like to say one is alot better than the other because they are both good.

If there was a "BEST" there would only be one on the market.

Thanks Dave. Great feature to keep one from sounding like an idiot by asking repeat questions. However, as icefishers, we are probably beyond help. Kind of curious as to why I've never seen an Otter displayed with the factory seat. Maybe I need to get together with someone to see it and at the same time show them how to get all the gear they need packed along.

Sure have Scupper. I saw once somewhere in this forum that Otter is manufactured here in MN but cannnot locate it again. Could someone give their location again.

      i cant help you with the weed thing, but i just came back form out that way......Regal, New London Hawick area. i dont no how big the swat of rain was but there is water standing everywhere. my buddy told me they had over 3 inches of rain yesterday/last night

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
