Okay,
I think I have a good idea on jigging spoons now, thanks guys, now what about line?
with the stained water in LOW, should lure action be my prime concern, or is there more to it than that? I normally use 8 lb. test mono down here, inside the house, and a ice line with mono leader on tip ups. What do you use on LOW? And does anyone up there use tip ups?
George

I use good ol' Trilene XL in 6 and 8 pound test for the majority of my icefishing, mono works better on the rod actions I prefer for jigging. I do use some Power Pro when I'm fishing a deadstick or bobberrod over the deepwater flats for the jumbo Perch and the Sauger/Walleye mix, whole different rod actions though. I think strech/sensitivity is a nonfactor when fishing the relatively shallow waters of LOTW straight down thru an ice hole when jigging. Tipups I only use when targeting Pike.
fiskyknut
[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 11-14-2003).]

I found that for deep water jigging (20'+), the 10/2 powerpro with a flourocarbon shock leader (12") works great. It allows you to use a softer tipped rod to compensate for the lack of stretch in the line compared to mono, which in my opinion allows a quicker hook set. Plus it helps keep line twist to a minimum. With those jigging spoons flipping around underwater you can get a good amount of line twist (something I hate). The swivel for the shock leader takes care of the twist so the line doesn't fly off your reel. Can't wait to get up to LOW this year.
Fisherdog

I've had success with Micro Ice, Stren, Berkley, Flourocarbon. I haven't really noticed a big difference in line when it comes to catching fish. Although too heavy test of line or too light test of line can have downfalls. Too heavy can be more visible even in the stained water and fishablility can be hindered a bit. Too light of line, well, lets say I wouldn't want to be fighting a 10 pound walleys on two pound test. Plus too light test of line won't perform as well when jigging larger lures then say 6 or 8 pound test.
I use 6 and 8 pound test most of the time. But 4 pound test gets brought out once in a while up on LOW.
I'm used to using 2 pound test for crappies and gills. But I wouldn't recommend it up on LOW when you have a shot at a trophy walleye or monster pike. Not to mention the roaming sturgeon or eelpout. They will have fun with the two pound test smile.gif
Good Fishin,
Matt
[email protected]
Catch-N Tackle
MarCum

I use mono sometimes, although fireline 8 lb is my favorite icefishing up there, as the stuff will not break, i have a tough time cutting it to make it break. I know alot of you guys dont like fireline though! wink.gif

Nothing wrong with fireline, I use it alot for a few different openwater applications. Different strokes for different folks, there's more than one way to skin a cat! Thats one of many cool things about fishing, lot's of ways to do things. If I remember right I think that old Widetrack fellow is a fan of braids thru the ice too!
fiskyknut
JHansel7, you should consider picking up a pair of scizzors made for cutting superbraids. Makes life a bit easier for sure!
[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 11-14-2003).]

Fisky- I know, scissors definately makes it easier, but if you happen to forget them, its a hard job to change lures!! ha. Where are you from anyway? Im from St.Cloud its a good ride here to LOW...oh well its worth it. Ill be up there the 19th of december for sure..cant wait. Also when you use your jigging spoons do you jig higher off the bottom or just usual where you would set a bobber at? because it seems to me like the bigger fish come suspeneded more up there...let me know, or you can email me, [email protected]

I live in Roseau co., born here in '62. I also have a trailerhouse over near Wheelers point north of Baudette I spend some time at thru some of the year. I will usually jig near the bottom, and up 3-4 foot or so. When those high fish come thru I'll bring the lure to them. On some days, or on particular spots, or when I mark fish high consistetly I'll jig thru that depth range as well.
I've been meaning to post on your spoon thread and will eventually. I've been waiting to see someone mention my favorite color AE. Has'nt happened yet!
Not sure if you've seen it or not, but you may want to check out a post from a couple winters back titled; "things to do on the big pond". It's probably a page or 2 back now.
fiskyknut

Well whats the color AE??? If you dont want to say on here email it to me, [email protected]

Well J, I guess you did'nt catch it in that 'things to do' post! What do you mean don't want to post it here? I've said it here often over the past couple years!!! The AEjr. in that gold back Perch/ft color is my favorite spoon, followed very closely by the hammered gold. I have a rod I searched high and low for that has just the right action for these spoons, and it is designated for AEjr use only. I have 6# XL on this set up, and I tie a small crane swivel to the end of the line. This prevents twist, and I can switch spoons via the snapring on the spoon and the swivel. Depending on cloud cover I'll usually start jigging with an AEjr in one of these colors. I also have a gold AEjr's I've doctored with a bit of orange or pink paint which work very well at times
I'm still gonna post on your spoon thread, gotta touch on what Curt brought up on there too. I'll get you some more info then as to other spoons and jigs and what not. Early day tomorrow and I should hit the rack soon. My dogs are buggin me to go out for a run too.
Fisky

I use fireline on my jigging rods. I love it for the super sensitivity and instant hook sets.
I use (believe it or not) Cabela's Pro-Line clear mono 4lb. test on my dead sticks. It works great, just keep it fresh. Its a very good line at a very good price.

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
