For the last 5 years a group of us have been going to Upper Red Lake on MLK weekend for a getaway. We have 9 guys and 3 wheelhouses. This year a group is pushing hard to head to LOW. I am an owner of one of the wheelhouses, and am a little resistant just because I have never fished LOW. I figured I would ask for recommendations from this group.

Where would you go? We would obviously want a place with plowed roads so we could drive out and set up.

How bad is the snow? Would we have to pay someone to plow out a spot for 3 houses on some fishable structure?

How far out is the bite right now???

Any info that anyone has would be great. Based on recommendations I am going to try to start calling resorts end of this week.

Thanks!

luv2fish: there are numerous access points to LOW. The one I am most famaliar with is at Wheelers Point. The road is maintained by Adrians resort where you would also obtain your road pass. I was there last week and we were approx 6-7 miles into the lake over Pine Island. They have a link at the top of the page and a phone call to them would certainly answer your specific questions. Good luck with your trip, I'm sure you'll enjoy your time up there.

another option is zippel bay they have roads you can drive out on and if you need a spot plowed they will for a small fee sometimes well worth it.I am headed up this weekend to get the house out finally good luck on your planning

I have never fished that body of water before. What resorts will really help a guy find fish? We are willing to pay if someone offers that service.....

Ask at Adrian's when you pay for the pass, they'll let you know.

I'll be going out of there Saturday. Good luck!

I usually go out of Adrians, Doesnt matter where you go out there, Its just like Red Lake, You'll catch fish anywhere. Some spots might be better than others, but you will always snag something no matter where you are. I always fish by the River, It always holds baitfish in the area. There is no night bite like on red, you do have a chance at catching some Saugers as well as some Monster walleyes though.

Thanks all for the info... We decided that my house would actually go up Thursday morning and fish for 14 hours on Red. Then we will meet the rest of the crew on the way to LOW. We are using the road out of Adrian's resort.....

Now, any hot colors on LOW?

GOLD and anything that glows. If you don't get a bite you either jig, jig, jig, or deadstick to the max(take a nap).

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.

Took another trip into the BWCAW last Friday to fish for lakers.  I waited until daylight to drive the snowmobile to the portage so I could safely cross the large pressure ridge in the middle of the lake.  There were 4 other parties already parked at the portage when I got there, plus 2 other parties came later in the day (one even after sunset).  Walking/towing on the lake was quite easy and I found a spot to fish with nobody close by.  Fished for over 10 hours until sunset and didn't catch a fish.  I did have 4 hits on jigs, including one I got up to the bottom of the hole before the snap swivel caught on the bottom of the hole and the fish shook off.  Enjoyed the sunset in the BWCAW before starting the trek out in dusk.  While leaving I saw 3 other people towing sleds just coming onto the lake, I assume to spend the night.  While snowmobiling in the dark back to the landing I got slightly lost but was able to correct my rout and make it out before running out of gas (was on empty).  Was very nice day in the BWCAW, but it is a tough trip when you don't even catch a fish.  May go back to Burntside this week for a much easier trip.

Anyone have any info on Susan Lake just north of Black Bay on Vermilion?  I'm curious if it's a panfish possibility while we wait for the opener.

Had a fish fry for my wife and the neighbor lady, so it’s time to get some more fish.

Hot out today to enjoy the weather and fish. The bite was crazy good. I kept 10 crappies and 8 gills. Gills were 7 3/16 to 8 1/8 inches crappies were from 9.5. 10.5 inches. Shallow water just below the ice. 3 mm pink and white with a white spug.
