Shiner Situation???

Recommended Posts

What is the live shiner situation? Last week I stopped at one of the premier bait shops, and was told no live shiners anywhere. I had to settle for fatheads, which was OK. Plenty of frozen shiners. Has the live shiners situation changed, or is it going to be like that the rest of the season???

Border bait has had shinners log cabin has not. I'm going up in the morning I'll post if there is some to be had. I've had better luck with the chubs this year myself.

We are heading to Arnesens on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. I expect we wil be passing Baudette around 6:30-7:00AM. Where would be the best spot to stop and get licenses and live shiners?? Thanks!

Border Bait did have shiners last week when I was up. On the east end of Baudette at the #71 junction Luckys Bait had shiners. Based on the different reports last week it apparently was not a good shiner run this fall. They are also theorizing that because the shiners did not run up the river as the normally do that is the reason the walleyes are as deep as they are now. Can't prove that however just what I heard from folks up there last week.

Lucky bait did not have live Shiners and neither did Log Cabin when we called last Thursday. We did however capitalize on the buy 2 scoops, get the third free at Lucky's. Its nice too that they are open 24 hours because we seldom hit Baudette before 10pm.

I wouldn't worry about having live Shiners. This past weekend I jigged with a fathead head and had a Rainbow or fathead on my deadstick. I caught about 50-60 fish in 2 days and only had 2 fish that I marked and couldn't get to bite.

If I can find nice, big rainbows I'll bring them along any trip. Usually a fat rainbow on the dead stick with a dead shiner on the jig is what I run. If fatheads is all you can find you'll be just fine.
