Local folk -
Does anyone, or anyones fathers, granddads, former roomates, use plain old hooks with sinker anymore.
Colored Lazerhooks?

Posted

Yup, I sure do. Sometimes I do better on that than anything else. Sometimes I use a plain hook with a bead or two just above the hook too. I learned this trick from some local fisherman on Devil's Lake. Seems to outproduce other stuff on it's fair number of days.
A plain hook is also my brother's favorite rig.
Scoot

I always rig up a plain hook with a split shot a foot up tipped with a rainbow shiner for walleyes on LOW. Medium-light action rod with 6 pound test. Deadsticking. Sure is a blast. I caught one walleye around 5.5-6 pounds last winter up on LOW using this approach. Whenever I would get a fish to show up on the flasher looking at my jigging rod and it wouldn't bite, I could reach over and twitch the deadstick and about 9 times out of 10 the fish would go over and smack the plain hook and minnow. Worked really well for those larger non-aggressive fish. Don't forget about all the perch it caught too.
Good Fishin,
Matt
[email protected]
Catch-N Tackle
MarCum

Try tying the blade of a swedish pimple up above a plain hook about 12 inches or so works very well too. I always keep that set up close to me and a few people I fish with use that set up in at least one hole all of the time.

I frequently use a plain Kahle hook with a split shot above it about a foot.
I use this set up on a dead stick and a Rock n Reel. Very productive on the shy eyes at times.

Well a guys gotta have some hooks along and like mentioned above there are those times when a plain hook will outfish anything else offered.
I'm with Gissert on the Kahle style, I'll take a #6 kahle in gold please.
The dropper rig that Ripper describes is a great option, and lot's of folks swear by this. I do this with Pimples, Kastmasters, Buckshots, and a few other types of heavier style spoons. One of my favorite rigs for those deep midwinter Perch I love to chow is a small white vengla with about an 8 inch, give or take dropper. Dropper rig is kinda boring sounding, these will now be called the 'Lip Ripper Rig'!
Another thing I've found to save a slow day is a small Cicada tipped with minnow head. Seems the vibration on the upjig will tick them off enough to make the bite out of reflex or something. These have turned many a slow day into an okay day for me.
I'm not saying that the above mentioned rigs are only for when the bite is off. I'm kinda spoiled by LOTW and I much prefer the days where they'll bite just about anything! You know your gonna have a great day when you ice your first fish after it attacks your depthbomb when you were setting your first line!
Fisky

Here are some of my tricks on LOW.
I have at many different occasions been able to get those big eyes to bite with a diff. approach. I see the large bars come in on the vex. At first I think that it is interference, but then it responds to my jig when I raise it. I slowly rise my buckshot or whatever and the large signalbar follows. Right on time when I stop raising, it looses interest. This is when I quickly drop the bait below it out of reach. It then slowly begins to drop to merge signalbars with my bait. This is when I quickly pull it up and it raises to it a bit faster. Sometime I do this cat mouse thing until I hook up and then is it on.
On a side note, I have at many, many diff. times fought a fish and had them come off half way up. Well, in the deeper water I can still see these fish on the vex. Contrary to my initial beliefs I got these lost fish to bite again 7 times out of 10.
I've also got the big boys to bite on a rattletrap or even a rattle n' rap.
I can't wait..........
Fisky, have you given those Cicada's a try on the open water yet? If not, give it a try sometime. The big gold ones with a piece of nightcrawler. Had some fun with setup last summer.

You betcha I have used them on openwater. Bladebaits are a great openwater bait at times. My all time biggest Walleye ever came on a gold Sonar back in the early ninties out of the Red river in late October. I don't hit the ice or the openwater without a selection of blades in the bag since then!!!
Fisky

Not that I want exact instructions but...
With the Pimple blade, do you put it in between the hook and sinker?freeflowing between the two?
And whats a rainbow shiner? Colored?

The weight of the pimple or whatever spoon you choose to use doubles as the weight.
fiskyknut

Whoops, part 2! I'm not sure what a Rainbow Shiner is, and I trap minnows! Usually up here when you here Shiner, it's an Emerald Shiner. When you hear Rainbows, its whats known as a Rainbow Chub. Good Rainbow chubs have a good bit of yellow on their bellies, almost chartruese yellow, and they're very tough and lively.
Fisky

Yep, thats it, an Emerald Shiner, my bad. I don't know why I was thinking rainbow shiner. The emeralds are the ones they trap out of the rainy right?
Good Fishin,
Matt
[email protected]
Catch-N Tackle
MarCum

I always like to have at least one line down in the house with a neon colored gamagatsu hook and a sinker. Out does a jigging spoon by far on the slow days.

I hope to be fishing…. It’s so rare that I get to go, I hate passing up the opportunity. 😉

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
