Help for 1st visit to LOTW?

Recommended Posts

We are planning our first trip up to LOTW the week of Feb. 21. Planning for 2-3 days in a sleeper to get the full experience. Does anyone have a recommendation for the best resort to choose, both in terms of being a good place to stay and based on where the best fishing is that time of year?

Thanks in advance!

IMO you will be much happier getting a day house and staying in a cabin for the "full experience" nothing better than having a good day of fishing and coming back in getting cleaned up and having a nice warm meal and then hitting the bar, or you can sit in a sleeper play cards all night and get drunk only to wake up in a fish house. I dont care what anyone says the walleyes dont consistantly bite at night, sure you MIGHT catch a few but not worth staying overnight for. In my opinion. Oh I almost forgot... stay at Ballards for the full experience

I agree with Wing Ding. Staying in a sleeper for more than one night is a bit much. Nice to get a cabin so you can get a shower and have a bathroom. I'm sure Ballards runs a decent operation but I believe most of the resorts are pretty equal, sure some people like some over another but I haven't heard to many bad reports of any resort on the forum.

Resorts/service does vary quite a bit. Ballards, Arnesons, or my favorite, Flag Island......if you don't mind going to the angle. Do not do a sleeper.

The group of guys I fish with have stayed in sleepers and we really enjoy it. We've stayed with Arneson's and Sportsman's in the past, and this year we're staying with Up North Sleepers. We prefer the sleepers because you can maximize your fishing time, save a little money, and have a unique experience by sleeping on the ice. I think sleepers vs. lodge comes down to personal preference. If you really like camping, I think you'd like the sleepers.

I love the sleepers up there. You miss no fishing time in the morning. You can literally roll out of bed and put lines down. We've stayed at Sportsmens and Zipple. Sportsmans was my favorite, and last Feb. a group of 4 of us caught almost 200 fish in 3 days.

They are all excellent resorts.. I know some resorts houses will be way out on the lake and they will bring you out there in a snow buggy. As for the fishing that time of yr that could be anyones guess? If theres a cold front or frigid temps fish a reef with a dead shiner.. Make sure to rent a sonar they'll catch ya more fish

What he said! I also like staying in sleepers. Now that we are all in our thirties we can't stay up as late as we used to so we are usually asleep before midnight and up to put lines down when it's light out. No waiting around to be taken out to your house. Just roll out of bed in your PJ's and start fishing. One guy cooks up some breakfast in the morning - scrambled eggs, hash browns and venison steak etc...

I have to agree, word for word! Same experience here!
