It's kind of quiet here. Anyone been out spearing?

I pulled my house off the lake when it got warm so it would'nt freeze in. I fished tip ups for a couple of days instead. I plan on getting it back out tomorrow or monday.

Anyone else been spearing and having any luck?

I pulled mine too the other day, just set it back up this morning. Didn't spear, just cut the hole and set up the house. I will probably try it in the morning.

During the rain I pulled the snow away from my house and made sure it was blocked up well. Just got back in from banking it with snow and chiseling out the hole. Nearly three inches of 'new' ice in the hole. I won't be making it out to spear tomorrow, chasing roosters on the last day of their season. Hopefully I'll make it out spearing next week.

I was heading to my spear house today, but got stuck on the way, and it was drifting in fast, I didn't want to get stranded to once I got un stuck, I headed home. I don't mind a little snow, but this wind can quit any time now.

I was out this afternoon. I tried a new lake that looked promising last fall. Once I set-up, I realized that visibilty was horrible. Another swing and a miss...

Ps That wind was chilllly!

Rainy Lake was a mess today.

They got a ton of snow in the last coupla days.

We went out of Sha Sha and speared Black Bay.

No ice roads plowed out there yet.

It was tough going with up to 2 1/2 ft snow drifts, 4 to 6 inches of slush under the snow. 5 inches of clear ice with 5 inches of white ice.

The nice thing was that we were the only (dumb, crazy... umm... ummm) dedicated ones out there! smile

Of course the Nord Lord showed me up today.

2-0 so far after today. (2 nice fat eaters ~24"ers)

We will be out early in the morning to continue the fun.

Will post pics later.

I speared from about noon to 3 today. The lake has really cleared up since the last time I was out. Could see bottom at 8 foot no problem today. The pike were very weary, had several stop at the edge of the hole only to turn around and leave. I did manage a pair of hammer handles for the buddies pickle jar, and saw and speared my first carp of the season. Within the next couple of weeks I hope to move my house to the other side of the lake where I have better luck with the carp. Also saw many bass today. I tried to take some pics to share, but must have had my trigger speed set too slow as they all turned out too blurry.

Ive had more outside the hole than usual this year also, Im going to start taking angle shots than passing, I have confidence with my spear its either getting stuck of Im missing it aint coming off... Unless the monster comes in... then it has to be in the hole.

the tracks in that picture are way different than mine. we have 4 independent tracks like merkman has on his side by side.

the tracks are great in the slush. i can go anywhere i want. untill you stop to fish and they freeze up tight. then what? you tell me.

they have there place. we pulled a snomobile traler on lake gogebec 2 years ago with 4 otters and 3 men and there gear on it in 2 feet of snow.

elwood, how do thoes tracks work in the slush and snow?

we have great ice here now the rain melted everything and refroze, its like a skating rink. 2 weeks ago i said my truck wouldnt go on the lake this year. now i think i will be driving out next week.

good luck

Thats merkmans dads rig it works ok but no so ok in the slush and we did push it and dig it out a few times with out it being 4wd we would of not got anywhere even with the skis he has it still didnt go thru the snow as good as i though it would.

but it does add the floatation just enough to get you going and they are the same stop for awhile and everything freezes up.

I saw a video of a honda three wheeler with tracks in the back and the wheel up front and I think that I could build a skior skis for the front and tracks in the back and it would go really good over the snow cause its so light but I will hopefully have this by next year

merkman,

Nice meeting you this weekend...you guys end up with any more fish? Conditions are pretty discouraging up here, I'm afraid it will be this way for quite a while.

We managed a 30" and saw a few others...including a gimme shot at the biggest fish dad or I have ever seen while spearing. After she went by everything shut down...I'm hoping to battle her on hook and line so she can pose for a picture grin

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
