Do a lot of you guys use Jigging Spooons for 'eyes? A friend of mine swears by them, I havent ever tried them for very long. he seems to do very well. Just wondering how you genius' use them... wink.gif Also hows the ice and weather doing??<P>JHansel<p>[This message has been edited by JHansel7 (edited 11-12-2003).]

I used to avoid jigging for walleyes because it is a lot of work compared to watching a bobber. In the past ten years or so I always jig and my luck has increased dramatically. My favorite through the ice is the Acme Kastmaster, 1/12 oz. I always tip them with a half minnow. Don't waste your money on Swedish Pimples as they do not work well for me any more. Good luck and have fun.<P>

I had great luck on LOW with the Angel Eye Jr spoons lat year. The brass colored one with the little tinge of red was my favorite.

My favorite lure on "DA-WOODS" is a #5 gold jigging Rapala tipped with a minnow head.<BR>Replace the treble hook on the bottom with a bigger premieum treble as the trebles that come with the Raps are too small.<BR>I also like the larger Demons in blaze orange and white/glow tipped with a rainbow chub.<BR>Good Luck!

What color spoons are you having the best luck on..i think im going to give them a try this year on lake of the woods. And how are you putting these minnows on? <P>JHansel

I like anything with a gold back, or all gold. Orange/yellow front with a gold back worked well last winter. As well did all gold. Pink too. I guess a lot of colors work, I think that the action is more important. Those hungry walleyes come through and they attack whats in their way. Also give rattlespoons a try too, I had a few extra hits on rattlespoons then normal spoons when the fish were less aggressive and during the down time periods. <P>I like to hook on a whole minnow through the head when the fish are attacking the bait hard, and I use just a minnow head when the fish are slower to approach and hit less aggressively. The whole minnow often times gets pulled off from less aggressive fish because they only grab the tail. I know it sometimes is the opposite, only a head for aggressive and visa versa, but thats what I found to work the best last winter up on LOW. <P>Give swimming lures a try too. The aggressive fish tend to be more eager to strike the swimming lure. Tip a minnow head on the lower treble and let the bait pause after you go through the jigging sequence. That pause or drop will be when you will get a lot of strikes. If you see a fish on the flasher and they don't hit, jiggle/twitch the lure as if the lure is shaking, that will sometimes draw in those hesistant fish. It mimics a minnow that is about to dart and walleyes can sense that and they know its no or never, so you'll often times hook up on a fish. <P>Good Fishin,<BR>Matt<P> [email protected]<BR><A HREF="http://catchn.com" TARGET=_blank>Catch-N Tackle</A><BR><A HREF="http://marcumtech.com" TARGET=_blank>MarCum</A>

Jigging spoons are one of my top producers on LOW. Angel Eyes, Busk Shot Rattle spoons, Glow Devils, Pimples, and Kastmasters. Tipped with a minnow head or whole minnow they can be dynamite! Also draws in a lot of pike, sauger, and perch as well. I almost always drop down a jigging spoon sometime while I'm up on LOW during hard water. <P>Swimming lures are another option that catch fish too.<P>Good Fishin,<BR>Matt<P> [email protected]<BR><A HREF="http://catchn.com" TARGET=_blank>Catch-N Tackle</A><BR><A HREF="http://marcumtech.com" TARGET=_blank>MarCum</A>

Why does just a head, or half of a minnow work? It doens't make any sense to me... Is it because putting a live minnow into the lake will kill it anyway?<P>fp<P><P>------------------<BR>"Cast riiiiight....there."

In some cases a whole minnow will ruin the action of a small jigging spoon. I only use about a 1/4 of a minnow when using a jigging spoon, just a little morsel for them to taste smile.gif

I agree, anything with gold seems to be the ticket on LOW. But thanks for the information guys and ill be sure to give them a try when we get up there!<P>Hows the ice? Anyone know? It got really windy lately...<P>JHansel

Cut bait works great in my opinion because of the strong scent it gives off. Combined with the action of a jigging spoon, it's hard for the walleyes to leave alone.<P>Remember to pinch the air bladder in the minnow so the bait doesn't ride up on the hook.

Posted

And also remeber to smear all the goo and scales onto the edge of the spoon as well.<P>

Posted

I like to pinch the heads off with my finger instead of cutting them with a scissors. Pinching the heads off leaves a little flap of flesh that provides more action is the water, by cutting the head off with a knife of scissors you won't get that little flap. Might sound miniscule but I've noticed a little bit of different in triggering power.<P>Good Fishin,<BR>Matt<P> [email protected]<BR><A HREF="http://catchn.com" TARGET=_blank>Catch-N Tackle</A><BR><A HREF="http://marcumtech.com" TARGET=_blank>MarCum</A>

ive been fishing low for about 15 years now and anything flashy gold or silver or glow will work just fine.one thing i do is buy an extra couple scoops of fatheads and use them as chum.every 5-10 minutes take 1 or 2 minnows cut in half make sure you pop the air sac and let them sink down to the bottom then watch your vexilar youll somtimes see fish coming up from the bottom to hit the chum.oh yeah and rosie reds i prefer over the river shiners

Posted

I use the buck shot rattle spoons, fire-eye minnow in the green, orange, or black gold. If the fish are aggressive I use the heavyier weights and the lighter weights if they are finicky. Just the head of a shiner and half the body of a fathead. Works great for me.<BR>Kupcho

In my opion i think that jigging spoons work the best up on the big lake but a jig and a minnow with a bobber still produces fish. Last year the Angel Eye's by JB lures work really well. The red glow produced that most and biggest fish we caught. But you know my luck the first bite i have the line snaped and i lost it. Also the glow blue Angel Eye works pretty well to.

Hammered silver and gold have been the ticket for me in the past. Hammered pimples, williams spoons, JB weasels, and JB angel eyes have all produced. Most of my larter walleyes (+25") have come in suspended well off the bottom.

The big draw to jigging spoons for me the <BR>combo use with the Vexilar. Targeting fish<BR>at various depths and getting them to bite<BR>is like playing a video game with a REAL<BR>RESULT!<P>I like the Angel Eye and AEjr.<P>Here is tip I would like other input on.<P>The big Angel Eye Minnow is best used in<BR>shallower water??????????????<P>I have found deeper fish like the JR and<BR>shallower fish hit the original AE, especially big fish in shallower water.<BR>anyone else?????????<P>------------------<BR>Curt Quesnell<BR>NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Which would you guys recomment, small angel eye or the bigger one? Alot of people have said the smalller one is their personal favorites.

I started using the AE three years ago and the JRs last year. I honestly can't say the size made a major difference. I caught fish on both sizes shallow and deep. To me the color seemed to be the major factor. This is only my opionion however and not based on any scientific research!!!!!.. I agree with Curt coordinating the check and the electronics is a must and the fish that come in suspended I have found to be the biggest. What a rush..... Bill

I really like the Glow Devils myself. I seem to have more control with them and I can concentrate on my jigging sequences better. But there is a place for Angel Eyes too. AE's are great for triggering power and attracting fish, they flutter and dart and it drives the fish crazy. I plan on having one rod rigged with a gold Angel Eye and another rod rigged with either a perch colored Glow Devil or the Red-glow Glow Devil. Actively jigging with spoons is a lot of un up on LOW, and can be really addicting smile.gif<P>Good Fishin,<BR>Matt<P> [email protected]<BR><A HREF="http://catchn.com" TARGET=_blank>Catch-N Tackle</A><BR><A HREF="http://marcumtech.com" TARGET=_blank>MarCum</A>

I like to use the Angel Eye Jrs and glow devils, last winter pink and glow red were the hot tickets. Gold usually would produce too. My favorite setup is jigging with a glow devil or a angel eye and then have a neon colored hook and split shot with a large live shinner under a slip bobber. On days when the fish were neutral or negative, the bobber would get them most of the time by giving it a slight twitch.

Just like a video game. Curt that is so true... There is a definate science to it. The longer that red line stays there you know good and well its just a matter of time. <BR>Kupcho

Try the Blue Fox Tingler. Its a seldom seen or used spoon and Ive had good luck with it. 2 sizes and about 7 colors to choose from. The silver, silver/orange , silver Chart and silver glow are good. It travels a lot so dont use it to close to other holes. Bigger fish seem to really slam it on the drop. Also I doctor them up with prism tape to.<BR> M.G. in Duluth is the only place Ive seen them at. Also try the Krockadile Chubby in gold and gold/orange. Another seldom seen and used spoon.

I like the heavier ones in deeper water because when the fish are biting, I want to get my line back down as quickly as possible. I tend to get a little impatient. Has anyone heard if they are going to make a medium size Angel Eye?

Posted

Ripper, in some conversating with Jeff B. a while back, it sounds like we may see some mid to late winter. Sounds like they're working on the tooling already. I have the feeling the inbetweener will become my new favorite spoon, and will edge out the AEjr. by a narrow margin, as to most productive. I can't wait to get my hands on some of these!<P>Have you seen/heard about the new colors coming this season for the Glo Devils? These will be hot on the pond for sure.<P>Fisky

okay guys just went to Sportsmans Warehouse and got 3 Angel eyes...hammered gold, pink and white glow and glow blue, hopefulyl one of those three will work! Are these hard to control and go all over the place? Hopefully not...hows the ice up there??<P>JHansel

JHansel7,<P>You should be fine with the Angle Eyes. You can control them and you'll see how nice the action is. The only thing you might be able to control is all fish you will catch wink.gif<P>Good Fishin,<BR>Matt<P> [email protected]<BR><A HREF="http://catchn.com" TARGET=_blank>Catch-N Tackle</A><BR><A HREF="http://marcumtech.com" TARGET=_blank>MarCum</A>

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
