My famiily and I went up to LOTW this past week and stayed at Zippel Bay. My dad and I went up last year and caught 180 some fish in 3 days so we talked it up and got my brothers and mom's hopes up...that was a bad idea. Fishing was very slow. 5 of us got 31 fish in 2 and a half days.

I tried getting outside and moving around. Too bad it was a zoo outside by us. Our house was in 25 ft and and i tried every depth imaginable. Got 1 sauger outside. I found out lure choice didnt make a difference. we got them on gold, pink, red, black, white, perch color, orange and yellow. Every fish we marked we caught. The problem is, that we didnt mark many.

we got 5 walleyes, all 15 or 16 inches. One had line wrapped around its gills, so i'm guessing it wasnt going to make it much longer. also got 2 big pouts. biggest was 10 lbs. The rest were saugers, and we got enough nice ones to eat a meal every night.

All in all, it was a fun trip, just the fish were copperating. The igloo was pretty cool, we hung out there and meet some nice people. I hope it was better for everyone else!

We were up at Zipple the same dates and had about the same luck. We had the shallow sleeper in about 15 feet and caught a few Saugers and had the deeper day house in 25 feet and caught a few more Saugers and a couple of Walleyes. Saugers were small and the Walleyes were maybe 15 or 16 inchers. 30 fish total for 2 guys over 2 days. May have to try it again later in the season!

December 26th, 27th, 28th

My group of four guys fished out of Zipple Bay for the first time ever for these three days and did ok.

Day 1 = 67 fish

Day 2 = 45 fish

Day 3 = 45 fish

157 fish total for the trip. 2 pout, 1 northern, 1 perch, 14 walleyes, and the rest were sauger. We had one slot fish. A twenty five inch. Lost another big one, and then had one massive sturgeon take our doodle bug on a rattle reel.

Rattle reels did better than jigging. Most of the saugers we caught were puking up little young of the year perch. So we used a lot of perch colored lures. We stayed away from the crowds and it sounds like we did much better than everyone else.

There's your problem...you won't catch anything up there fishing next to a ton of people like that. Get away from the pack and you will have better luck. I was up there on the 26th and hit them hard..."away from the zoo"

first time low in feb mid what is the slot ? for walley,?

you can have 8 Sauger or 4 Walleye and 4 Sauger with a total not more than 8 fish each. No more than 4 walleye for your limit with none between 19.5" to 28" must be released. You can keep 1 over 28" but it would be part of the 4 limit on Walleyes.

Is the limit diff in the summer?

Zippel Bay Dec. 30th, 31st, and Jan. 1st.----Resort houses. 2 People.

Dec. 30th---27FOW---25 Walleye-Sauger(half and half)/2 elepout. Kept 6; 4 Walleyes 15-17 inches, 2 15 inch saugers. Fishing was OK. They weren't very aggresive. Most fish were caught off a pink glow jig on a bobber.

Dec. 31st---21FOW--- 15 Walleye-sauger--1 jumbo perch. kept 7 (8 including the perch)-- I caught my biggest walleye on LOW, 29inch-10.15lbs. Fish was released. It came in rather easy (4lb test), one big run and that was it. I got her up to the hole and she came up the hole with her mouth wide open, I took me like 2 seconds to realize that it wasn't not an elepout, so I got all excited and basically through my hand in her mouth. It was fun.

Jan. 1st---we went back to 27 FOW. 2 14 inch saugers. kept both. Very slow day; the storm shut them off big time. We had 2 other bites, but the they were just suckin on the minnows.

would post pics but do not know how to.......

Go to a picture viewer on your computer, bring up the picture and you should have a "resize" option. Just resize to a small picture and save. You should be good to upload then.

We are pulling the wheeled house up to fish out of Zipple 1/14-1/18 (first time not renting). So now I have a bunch of questions...

How much snow is now on the ice? How much ice is there?

I have the lakemaster chip for LOW but I noticed almost zero structure in the bay.....what should I look for and around what depth would you start out in? If you don't want to post in here let me know and I can email you directly.

Anyone else going to be up there that weekend?

Hey Beast, I will bringing up my wheelhouse the night of the 14th and fishing the weekend. Black 20' Ice Castle with diamond stamp metal 24" skirt all around. Most likely coming up with my Dad and his truck, 02' Chevy 4 door 1/2ton HD. If you see more than one setup matching this discription, look for the extremely hyper german wirehair running around outside my house.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
