Albers, that's great to hear. I'm planning on driving over to Whitewater tomorrow morning for some fishing. Any tips on flies?

Albers, I had a bait shop owner in Elba tell me the same thing today when I stopped in for a few tapered leaders. I unfortunately, had no luck. But than again, I was mostly just out to learn how to cast my new fly rod. I did spot a few fish, but I definitely need to learn some techniques for getting there attention.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping ice from building up on the eyelits of the rod? That was the only bad part of the entire day, other than getting a few leaders miserably tangled up.

i personally dont have any secret tips 4 that problem, i usually just clean them out periodically as i fish. ive also had luck in the winter using either a bead head pheasant tail or prince nymph but the scud is usually my go to. also 2 save urself a little cash i use regular fishing line as a leader. small spools of your stiffer type monos like trilene xt seem 2 lay out very well (better than store bought leaders in some cases) in like a 2 or 4lb test. also you will want to run a real small split shot about 18-24 inches out in front of that scud to help it both track well and get down into those cut banks a little better

So you just use a 4lb test mono for a leader, rather than buying the tapered leader? I guess I don't see why you couldn't, since you hook the tippet up to the end anyways...

ya i actually prefer them to tapered leaders plus it makes retying quick. maybe try each and see which one casts better for you. plus with the mono i always make them a little long for those picky days when you have to retie a bunch to find what fly the fish want. also r you using a strike indicator float about 6-7 ft above your fly

I'll have to go and pick up some regular mono before I go back out(I think on Sunday).

Yes, I did use the strike indicators that were included with my cabela's prestige combo pack. I can't image that there is a huge difference in terms on floats, but maybe i'm mistaken.

Honestly, I think my biggest problem was my approach and casts. My casting ability is low. I also need to learn alot more about technique. I have NONE. I figure it will all come with practice.

ya practice, practice, practice. ya indicators r all about the same.some guys dnt even use them but helps to have that quick hook set in the winter. ill prolly b out fly fishin this weekend or maybe tommorrow if the papermouths arent bitin ill let ya know what there bitin on if i figure it out

A good tip to keep your guides from freezing up is spray on some PAM cooking spray! Good luck fishing! Not a big winter stream fisherman, prefer the ice, but once the grass turns green I'll be hitting it hard!

Does anyone have or know where to find pics of a ice fishing rig set up for trout? Seen some different bobbers or something mid-way up the rod, between eyelets on the line...

My guess would be that you will get a fairly quick answer in this forum

my go to setup is a #16 or 18 orange scud then a real small split shot about 18-24 inches above that and then a strike indicator about 7-8 ft above all that. theres a million different strike indicators out there i use a small foam ice fishing bobber personally (the style u push the little toothpick in to keep it from sliding) but they make little foam pinch on ones that work alright 2. it just has to b something u can see. ive even seen people just tye a piece of bright colored yarn on

How has the trout fishing been going so far this year? Im supposed to get out before my 10 oclock class at winona. I am supposedly going to be learning to fly fish with a friend, dont know if that will happen or not.

I went a lot this summer with friends. We all used inline spinners and only caught a few fish all summer, but that was because a lack of time spent, a lack of waders, and the lack of experience

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
