Zipple Bay Report Tues-Thurs 12/21-12/23

Recommended Posts

The drive took close to 11 hours each way up and back from central Iowa due to the bad roads but it was well worth it. 4 of us fished from noon on Tuesday to 4 pm Thursday out of Zipple Bay Resort's houses. We were fishing in about 22 ft and had a fabulous trip. Limits all three days and even let quite a few 13-15 inch Walleys go. Slot fish of 20",22",22.5", 24" and my largest Walleye through the ice at right under 29" (released). Other highlights were a 33" Northern that hit my cousin's jig as he was dropping it down the water column, likely feet under the ice, 2 Eelpout and 1 monster perch. I would love to say that we had some secret technique but after Tuesday we realized that it didn't really matter much. Jigging, dead stick, plain hook, gold, pink, yellow. Also found zero difference from emerald shiners(bought at Lucky Bait in Baudette), rainbow shiners or fatheads. Some of the hottest action came when we all were cooking and eating breakfast and just had bobbers set with little movement at all. Thursday the bite was a little slower but we realized we just needed to work closer to the bottom. Previous 2 days had fish active the entire bottom 2 feet. Something interesting to the activity of the fish was that when one of us missed a fish, it was almost a certainty that someone else would get a bite. We caught numorous fish that had 1,2,or even 3 other shiners in their mouth from the rest of us missing that same fish. We caught an Eelpout that had a jig that broke off from 2 hours earlier. Weird stuff. Anyways, it was a fantastic trip. Good luck to all and have a Merry Christmas.
