Just curious if anyone has been on the Lake ice fishing by Frontenac? What are the ice conditions like? Just looking to walk out, been itching to use my brand new ice shack! Also how is the bite?

Thanks

DB

I was out today, ice thin and only one small sauger.

You ever run into schools of white bass or random smallies through the ice? I've caught some on the croix in the winter, would be nice to have another place I could get some of them.

Posted

Not running in to schools, you might get a couple here and there but must of that action happens up further in the river.

JB- I've never targeted them, but I usually will get one or two whities when I fish Frontenac. They usually come through with huge clouds of baitfish. When the screen fills up, grab a rod with a jiggin' rap and start ripping towards the top of the clutter. A lot of time they'll hit just as the flasher starts clearing up.

Good Luck!

Could be worth a shot. I suppose the majority of people target walleyes/saugers, and everything else comes by accident. But is there pike and crappie to be had as well? The last couple years I've fished pepin the in the summer I've been getting more varities of fish.

Be carefull out there guys. I was fishing out there yesterday and watched 2 guys walking fall thru to their shoulders. I was standing on 8 inches of ice, but there are some weak spots out there to say the least. Just be mindful of where the pressure ridge typically is and you should be ok. Also, the fishing has been really tough. Every fish I have pulled up has been spitting out big shad.

Be safe guys, Chris

Planning on heading down to fish around Frontenac this Friday, any reports or updates on the ice? I'll be sure to post on how it goes.

I have not heard anything about the ice condition, with this cold weather you should be ok, but I do know that the flow is up a bit right now.

Good luck any info would be great.

Fished our of Frontenac yesterday afternoon. Current was pretty good, we fished over about 7" of ice, but moving just a matter of 10' in any direction resulted in more or less ice. Bottom line is be careful, and I would not recommend driving anywhere near shore on the MN side. The sauger bite was ok, also caught one 14.5" eye, fishing just off the bottom with bright colors and just a minnow head seemed to do the best.

Fished Frontenac again Sunday (yesterday) afternoon from 1:00 until dark. Still only 6-7" of ice where we fished and a good amount of current. Iced 12 keeper saugers between six of us and threw back a half dozen or so dinks. Jiggin raps and buck shots fished very close to the bottom seemed to work best. Also picked up a few on a minnow with a bobber.

Thanks for the update. Was down last saturday managed 6 total and only one nice sauger. same story as you. Hopefully this cold front makes more ice there. Wont be down this weekend headed to LOTW. Good luck everyone.

Hows the ice conditions, any report

Anyone been out of Maiden Rock? Just wondering what ice conditions are like coming from WI side of river/lake.

Posted

Ran down yesterday afternoon. Driving out of Maiden Rock is not a problem. Fishing was pretty slow.

Posted

I fished out of frontenac yesterday morning, pretty slow. Wow it was cold out there though. Had fish coming through, but no takers. Only mangaged 1 sauger.

Posted

Carefull out there everyone, we had the first of the year vehicle sink yesterday. I havent been down there yet to investigate but gotta assume it was off the point.

Posted

Anyone been out lately. I was down 1/15 and did ok. How is the ice.

Posted

It doesn't sound like the ice is very good, a truck went through the other day.

Posted

Yeah I would never drive on the river. Scary ice.

Posted

I wonder if people will ever learn not to drive where they don't know what they are doing? A few trucks fall through the same spots every year like clock work.

I can't believe all of the people driving their trucks and trailers out on pepin today.

Just wondering if there is still enough ice to take a four wheeler across the lake from Madien Rock? Thinking about heading out there this coming Sunday what is the bite like down there what techniqes are producing?

Thank you,

DB

The ice is still safe just stay clear of Methodist point. I haven't been to No Point lately, but if you go that way use extreme caution. You will be able to see the bad ice on Methodist point from the hill. As for fishing, I haven't been out since the thaw, will probably get out this week. Good luck fishing!
