Had a couple bucks in my turnip plot tonight. A forkie and a buck that was muchhhh larger bodied, but minus his antlers. Is it normal for bucks to be dropping this early? I'm used to seeing bucks with antlers well into March.

Same dang thing every year.... Bucks will drop sheds in December, January, February, March or as late as April. Each buck to its own.

From wild deer to game farm deer, yes genetics is involved when they shed their antlers, but also very big criteria is healthy animals will and do hold their antlers much longer on average than less well conditioned animals.

I appreciate that laker, honestly, apparently where I'm at the deer go into winter and maintain through winter in very good shape that's good to know, but the deer where I live shed very quickly and they have the same corn, beans, alfalfa, salt, mineral, people feeding etc. The only difference I can tell is the soil is clay where they shed early and rich rich black dirt where they don't so I wonder if testosterone is at issue as the late shed area has ample ample bucks and around the clay soil area they're much less numerous per square acre, mile or whatever, they roam further to service the does in the clay area and in my other black dirt area there's more than enough bucks to do the job ? IDK nature eh.

Saw these in the backyard (east metro) yesterday. There were 8 total - 4 still had both antlers, 3 had no antlers, and 1 had only one antler left. Backtracked their trail today - no sheds, but the pup had tons of fun in the deep snow. Excuse the poor photos, it was getting dark, but I wanted to get something to post here because I have long been an admirer of this thread!full-21921-42450-deerfeb8.jpg

Well winter has finally loosened her icy grip down here in eastern WI so I took the new camera out for a hike today. Nothing big but it's good to finally find one after walking as much as I have this year.

Thursday I seen a fork horn on the way home from work... Thought they would have dropped by now!

While I was out today I saw one with one side still on, and last weekend when we were up at Lutsen skiing we saw 2 bucks with both sides and one with one side still hanging on. I agree it seems late especially for such a bad winter. As for todays hike I got one more to add to the pile.

It was super fresh. You can see his tracks in the snow. I was following him for awhile into his bed...

Heres a few Ive found so far. Been a suprisingly good year, even with all the snow. Now to match a few of them up before the squirrels take care of em!

I did a lot of walking again today. I didn't find anything till the end of the day other than to many guys out walking the same piece of land. The word must have gotten out since last year when I had the whole place to myself all spring. But on the way back to my truck I tripped over something, and after closer inspection it was a antler that was out there for at least one full year. It had been ran over by a disk multiple times while planting the food plot burying everything but a portion of the main beam. Hopefully I can continue the good luck while I'm back in MN looking next weekend.

I'm probably blind but where is it?

If it's what I see way in the back of the pic, that looks REALLY nice but I can't tell.

Got a close up if that's it?

I went out this weekend for a total of about 5-6 hours between Saturday and Sunday in an area that has a lot of wintering deer and had great success finding 20 antlers/sheds (a couple were "break offs"). I found one set that would probably score in the mid 120's with a 14" spread credit, and the biggest single scored 64". Wish I had more time to search as I know I only scratched the surface. It sure is fun finding sheds like that!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
