Hes beautiful Boyd is! You seem very proud of him CC! I hope he comes running back to you with an 80 incher one day! wink

Found this matching set yesterday afternoon. Of course the few times I have shed hunted this year found nothing, and then I find these when I was not shed hunting. Found about 10ft apart on the side of a significant ridgeline. Both chewed, the right antler base and first 6 inches is chewed almost all the way through. Bad pic I know, no camera in the field.

Nice find none the less. Darn critters can do a number on them antlers if given time. Never have found a match. That would be neat.

Just put in the bridges on the trail to the mountains just need some snow and I can be up looking for some antlers and horns. If there is a caribou connected to the antlers all the better. Good to see you out and aboot.

I'm hoping to get out after this cold front goes through

A coworker of mine finished up bowhunting in WI this weekend and said he saw 2 bucks with both sides off and another only carrying one antler.

Posted

I found two pretty decent 5 point sides this weekend while bowhunting the final weekend in North Dakota. I also saw several bucks that had shed one or both sides.

Posted

I jumped one this weekend with both antlers gone and one with one side dropped while out coyote hunting. This was in east central WI. The time has come to start putting some miles on the boots again.

I've shed hunted a lot with little luck. What's the best strategy or places to look? Thanks

Do you shed hunting pros think its to early in southeastern mn.

The bucks I saw were as far south as La Crosse. I don't think most bucks will start dropping for close to a month though, at least that's how its been in past years. I have found very few sheds before valentines day when I look back through the pile. I concentrate on food and bedding areas. The problem is they could be any were in between also so cover a lot of ground.

Searched a couple hours in the extreme cold this morning. Standing corn and lots of sign. Several nieghbors on the board with nice finds already. Gonna try again tomorrow night. No dice for me yet....

Yes, I generally see them carrying till March down there.

Everything I see in the Mille lacs area still has their antlers. Camera and ones I see.

Thanks guys. I'll wait a little while yet. Just looking for a excuse to get back in the woods. : )

Pretty easy to think "the bucks still have their antlers" when you see one (or even a group) of bucks with antlers. With that said, I picked up two fresh ones last weekend, and I've heard of a number of big sheds being found. Every year there are bucks that drop in December and bucks that drop in March (for example, I had one mature buck on trail cam that dropped in mid-December three years in a row). It doesn't matter whether you're in S. MN or N. MN, there will be sheds on the ground in December.

When is the shed rut? That's when I plan to look.

April 1- 12 this year... prior to that its just sporadic scooping activity! Too hit and miss to make it worthwhile! whistle

Check this out. Pretty cool Youtube video.

Oh my gosh! What are the chances of catching that on camera? That's awesome!

Probably worse odds than winning the lottery considering it is an ablino! That is incredible!

Side bar - A couple years ago we had a nice buck drop both antlers in front of the camera, however the camera was in still mode and didn't capture the drop. The young man that found them also walked past the sheds twice before finding them the third time by (as captured on camera)!

High tower where do you shed hunt? Mn? North, south?

Posted

All in Mn, Duluth on south.

Those are some great sheds!

Almost better then hunting, get some nice racks and no limits too worry about.

Had a couple bucks in my turnip plot tonight. A forkie and a buck that was muchhhh larger bodied, but minus his antlers. Is it normal for bucks to be dropping this early? I'm used to seeing bucks with antlers well into March.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
