Not sure... Some poacher probably killed it. Either that or it's sheds were never found, or it died in the middle of a swamp and never got found (highly unlikely!)

If I'm hunting on Christmas Day I'll be carrying my bow or possibly a shotgun grouse hunting. I'm not looking for sheds when I can still shoot something.

I also checked my cams and had a smaller buck drop one side too. Hope you find that shed, nice buck too! Good Luck

I hope he don't get tagged as a doe by a bow hunter, there's our proof not to move rifle season back which pushes muzzy season back and it's March for me, I guess Valentine's day I could try to shed hunt but the majority in my area drop after that, bigger bucks shed first usually is that correct ? That's real cool hightower, what part of the state ? I am going to try a new area this winter where they shed much sooner.Just need a good crust on this snow so they can't fall thru.

Got hit by a car. DNR has it now.

nice set! jcup, where did you hear this? I would love to see it.

I noticed looking into Iowa since there season is later somewhat that the DNR has a few paragraphs about how to tell if it's a shed buck or not, they say shoot at deer in a group etc. don't shoot the lone large deer etc. found it kinda interesting, good luck shed hunters, those racks will be a touch slippery, could be a perfect time to find early shedders as the rain should melt some of the snow down, as long as the snow stays away which it looks kinda like it will in much of the area I'm in anyway, MB

Yep, East/Central part of the state.

Congrats on all those sheds hightower! I'm new on here but I'm looking forward to posting some pics of my own sheds and hearing how things are going for everyone else.

I have a question on sheds, I know the deer may bleed after sheding thier antlers from the connection point. So I was out yesterday fallowing a heavily traveled deer trail and spotted blood of to the side of it. Do you guys look more caefully if seeing something like this or is it probly something else? thanks!

Posted

vexilarman, its always good to follow up on a small blood trail while shed hunting. however, if you shed hunt a lot in the winter you will find a fair amount of blood. deer bleed for lots of reasons, but i always follow a blood trail but seldom lead me to a antler.

hightower, very impressive!!! you've got a dandy crop of bucks for next year!!! you must have a lot deer in your search area. do you have a standing corn field in the area or a good food source?? keep up the good work!!

No major food source, wintering area, lowland.

A new find from yesterday.

Picked up another shed! Very sad find on the buck... lots of history with that guy. Sheds, sightings and several t-cam pics.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
