Got out today and found the match. It scores 77 inches even and the other side was 77 2/8 inches. This deer should be a booner this year.full-15001-17807-401210_314377885277099_

Wow, that is a awesome find on that dead head!

Posted

Here is another dead head i found last year (170). its in the background of the other pic. I would rather be finding sheds then dead bucks! 8 out of 10 dead buck finds of mine are near water, like within 20 feet. The picture in my prev post is 2 feet from the river (looks like a big branch). I think if it wasnt for the vine in the rack it would have washed away! the left antler and skull was burried in frozen sand. used one of his rib bones to chip out. dead for a few years all i had to do was a quick rinse down. I am leaving it as is. I like the brown color in full-37697-17838-0220122120.jpg

Very cool. Thanks for sharing!~ And come to think of it,, I do see a lot of deadheads posted by water. Anyone have a decent answer to why that is?

I've always heard that a wounded deer will head towards water. Maybe thats why?

Posted

I can't wait for them to start shedding, these photo's ramp me up. About 2 weeks and it's game on till mid-april. Just received 3 bucks with full gear pictures where I shed hunt so hang on horsey, not yet. March 10th-April 10th is primetime. Un very unscientific but so it seems the bucks in the sandier soil seem to shed earlier than the bucks in the richest of soil areas, seems that way according to the t-cam buck pics I've gotten over the last several years. Think that's a theory ? Or is it more about nutrition ? Good Luck.

My neighbor thinks they go for water because they will run a fever after they have been wounded. There is also often times thick underbrush or tall grass near waters edge maybe because of more sunshine..... Maybe its a predator issue... They can put their backs to the water and only worry about whats coming from one direction... some thoughts i guess

Loss of blood will force a mammel to be thirsty. Must replace fluids.

here's a 111 3/8 non typical. pictures do no justice of the size of this thing.

Insane! Did you find those nonteepical? Either way that is one insane shed!

Posted

no, he found them the day before i got to his place. we went moose sheddin and came up empty, but his find the day before made the weekend.

Tonka did you measure them main beams?

Posted

Yeah the smaller side is 28 1/8 on the main beam and the higher scoring side is 25 4/8. One antler is about 105 and the other about 84. About a 205"er on the hoof.

Here are some other pics of the big sheds

WOW you guys are finding some HOGS out there, nice work.

+1 ! great pics and finds. I found my 2nd of the year last weekend, just another small 4pt side. I was really getting pumped with the lack of snow, but then we got 5 inches, and projected another 4-6 this weekend.

Hey Tonka, are you entering them as a set at the classic? Pretty sure youd win, last year the biggest non typ set was 179 with no spread, your 10 inches above that. or are you gonna enter them individually as singles? I was just reading up on the show details. Its 20 dollars per shed as singles, or its 25 dollars if you have a set. so itd be 40 bucks if you entered them as singles. Just curious

HEY NONTEEPICAL... Im sorry but i gotta call you out on that quote above. That shed was not found anytime recently. Unless 15 years ago is considered recent! I know who owns that shed, along with its 87 inch mate. Where you getting your info?

Posted

great sheds guys

Posted

Shed Freak, were gonna enter them as a set. Thanks for the info, It'd be pretty awesome if they took 1st.

Posted

nonteepical.......i'm waiting for your reply on the big antlers you've resently posted and the details behind them!

Posted

I'm patiently waiting as well! I sent him a private message too, I don't think he liked being called out on them. No response. Anyways , I know the details, and it's not a recent find. 15 years ago. Local though. That picture he posted was taken at the sports show in Duluth. I have the same exact picture in my phone. Great shed , but false story

Posted

hey shedfreak, good to see you back on the site! you or any of your buddies have any luck this winter? any cool finds? i see you got dumped on last night with nearly a foot of snow.

Posted

Hey bud, I haven't gone anywhere. I've always been following the thread. I decided I wasn't posting any of my finds anymore during shed season. Too much competition here to have people seeing what and when I'm picking things up. I'm sure ya understand. I plan on an annual year end post to tell the story of what went on. It's been slow, slower than normal, but let's face it, it was a craZy winter. Totally different patterns than I've ever seen. But I'm still optimistic. As far as getting the usual numbers that is. There's a few guys in here, yourself included, that I would be more than happy to stay in contact with through private message or email. Good luck during the upcoming melt!

Posted

I agree. There are still a good number of bucks carrying. I was on a big 8 and my buddy got his one side and saw him as a half rack with 2 shed out bucks and 5 still carrying both sides. Hopefully we can pick his other side. This year had been insane with competition. Good thing the snow held off otherwise the constant fresh boots in every spot would make a guy depressed! lol

Shedfreak, you ever get any moose sheds?

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
