We were goin out this morning but decided against it. This week I have seen people fishing both Chesterwoods and Fosters. I haven't check for ice thickness myself.

Drove out to willow creek resv. and the entrance is pretty much snowed in and unplowed, this leads me to believe its gonna be the same for everywhere else in rochester.

I fished Fosters on Friday before the snow storm. There was about 5 inches of ice but there were visible thin spot in the norht end and a crack with water going across the middle from near the beach to the west side. I did not get back over after the storm so I would be very careful and would expect some water to come up through holes.

I was out there yesterday at Foster managed to land 2 nice size trout. Got there at noon and the bite died down after 2pm.

Fishing was pretty good but the catching was kind of weak. I had a couple quick strikes as soon as I set up that I missed and then two more awhile later with the same result. Got one into the hole before it came off and then landed one just as I was packing up. Not bad action for 3.5 hours on the ice. Fish were deep for the most part instead of a couple of feet under the ice. Might be too much light and shadows with the thin ice and (at that time) little snow.

Evobass, how was the ice looking?

There have been people on SCR. In fact there is a Ultimate Panfish League Rochester event out there on Saturday. Google it for more info.

As I understand it, the ice is shapping up pretty decent. I've heard it was 5" before the big snow storm and cold temps. I know there have been people out there this week, but didn't hear an ice report. I do know the geese were keeping the entire North end open so that's gonna be the worse ice.

My 7 yr old son and I hit foster' late this morning. We fished in 17 fow with about 7-8 inches of ice. Last 4 inches werew nice clear ice with the top half being cloudy ice due to snow. No prob drillin thru it and held this big fella just fine. Caught nothing but stunted bluegills but they were all too happy to bite which made my son a very happy fisherman.

Looking forward to hit the ice againm with my son over xmas break.

See you out there...

How is the ice at fosters with all the snow? I'm hoping to make over there sometime in the next week.

Any reports on the fishing at fosters would be great too. Thanks.

I've been out to Fosters often over the last month. Only caught one rainbow. I agree with all the tiny panfish, even the crappies I caught were 5 inches. Do the trout have any kind of aggression in that pond? I've been using a couple small spoons tring to avoid the sunfish with no luck. I caught my trout on a waxie.

when I go to Foster i strictly go for trout. No waxies, no minnows just a diamond jig tipped horizontally with a blood worm by northland tackle. I have caught them before on a spoon tipped with a minnow head but the jig and plastic has worked best for me. The key is to not move around, stay put and let the trout come to you. I always go to the same spot 20 yrds. from the rock pile in 15ft of water. Hope this helps and tight lines to you!

Almost forgot, my lowrance x67c can easily pick out the trout from the herd(panfish).

Alright, Thank you. I have thought about not moving lately. Too cold for that anyway. I actually bought some blood worm jigs today. Well I know there was one brook trout left in there as of a couple days ago cause I saw him swim by. (saw the white on the fins). I'm in the clam prospector if anyone wants to chat.

Anyone know if they/how often they stock Fosters? I saw on the DNR site they put an estimated 10,000 trout in there a year. Do they stock it in the Winter/

I was at Foster/Arenes park today.. several huts around the north and south area. we were there for 3 hrs, caught several bluegills on waxes right at sunset. WX front moving in tonight could be reason for the light bite action. that's ok, afternoon on the ice w/son beats just about anything else.

The trout are metered out in small, frequent batches all winter long. Seems like every two weeks or so from hearsay. They are put in hungry and there isn't a plethora of eats in the pond, so they are pretty catchable for the most part. The ones that get C & R a few times become a little more wary.

I copied this from the DNR website:

Foster-Arend lake is a 60 foot deep, 18 acre lake, that provides excellent cold water fishing opportunities for the youth and elderly in Rochester. Since it is managed primarily as a "put and take" fishery for the young and old, the lake is open to fishing year 'round. Because of unpredictable weather conditions during some times of the year, we do not have a set stocking schedule. However, the lake is stocked just prior to any event that would have kids out of school. This would include Easter, Memorial day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, MEA etc. In addition, stocking occurs every 2 weeks or so throughout the year except between June 15th and September 15th, when surface temperatures are to warm. Foster-Arend is stocked with approximately 10,000 catchable trout each year. Most all of these are Rainbow trout with a few Brook and Brown stocked on occasion.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
