Buffalo Lake

Recommended Posts

Was out Friday morning for a few hours - one nice crappie and a handful of small perch. I didn't get out until 8 AM so I missed most of the prime fishing time.

Anyone know who put up the wood stakes out from the north access, and why the ice is so broken up around there? Was that just from all the slush?

If thats the access I can think of being the correct one, its usually busted up or bad ice there 2 years ago I had my truck go through the ice. Best thing about it was I was only a few feet from shore so I didn't loose a truck. Kinda weird how it happened a half ton pick-up went before I did and had no problem then I busted through the ice.

ice is a trip sometimes huh? Hope it wasn't Karma that sunk your tires. Not bothering with the crowds on buffalo so far this year, so they should bite good without me there.lol.

Anyone been having any luck? I've been out a few times the last couple weeks - small perch and had one nice walleye but the line broke before I could get it in the hole (also the only walleye I've seen the last three times out). Seeing crappies on the locator but cannot get them to bite. Have talked to several people out there - everyone says it's been quiet.

It's been pretty quiet. Switched from walleyes to crappies. 3 of us went out last night for a few hours in the perm and caught 5 crappies. Lock Jaw. The bite should hopefully improve with the warm up.

Been slow for me. Decent crappies are in there but they aren't exactly jumping out the hole. Mostly small perch. kept me up from 4AM on the other day out there.

I was out there on Tuesday with a buddy of mine and ended up catching around 7 nice 10" to 11" crappie's and a lot of little perch and sunnies. None of the walleye's we here are in that lake. We were not going to eat them so we let them all go but it was a fun night out. You have to spend some time on the lake but there out there.

we were out from 3 to 8:30. I think it was around 16 foot of water. It wasn't a secret spot we were in the cluster of ice houses that are out there but on the edge of them.

I was out today from 3-630 over in the courthouse area. There are plenty of tracks out there but I did see two different people get stuck. They managed to get out without any assistance. My 4x4 pickup was definitely sliding around but never got stuck. Managed to hit nothing but small crappies today.

I was on Sunday and would have a similar report to Mike. There is a well traveled path out towards the 35' hole (vicinity) from the DNR access and another path heading out towards the middle of the lake.

I blazed my own path with my 4x4 and didn't have much problems but was sliding around a bit. Snow was powdery.

Any crappies hitting? Not looking for size just numbers, to get some action

I would think you could get better numbers at Pelican than Buffalo with the occasional 9-10+ on Pelican. You can also get a few sunfish mixed in.

I can't speak for everybody else but size on Buffalo has been way down for me. Numbers have been OK but very few keeper sizes.

I did manage two 11.5 inch crappies back in January but I wonder if they are leftovers from the handfuls of 9-10" fish I was catching all of last year. Last year I did fantastic on Buffalo for Crappies. This year has been pathetic. I've fished structure all over the entire lake with the same report. Decent, but not great numbers and smaller size.

I'd probably try elsewhere too. Not sure if Pelican would be my first choice because accessing the lake has it's own hurdles but probably is a better option than Buffalo.

Good Luck!

It was a slow year on Buff compared to the past two. Size structure wasn't too bad but numbers were down for us. We've been having much better action on other local lakes as of late. Hopefully we can get a few consequtive successful hatches from mother nature.

We were hitting good numbers of nice sized crappies in jan. several 10-12 inchers. Went out there a couple weeks ago and we still caught quite a few but the size was down at least in the spot we were at. I will be back out next week and see what happens.

I think I might take my father out Saturday or Sunday on Buffalo. Has anyone been driving out there still?

Found some hungry perch today. Had a great time with the old man on his first ice fishing adventure. He is addicted.

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.
