Thats what I want to hear!!!
I have the worst LOW virus.
It will last until I go up in Jan!

Widetrack, we were thinking you moved away or something being you haven't posted in awhile. Keep us posted on the ice. I just hauled the ditch pickle home last night. Just need to get a few studs in it and I'm ready to go. If you need a tow, give me a hollar (ha).

Ripper,
I'm still around and kicking...
Sadly I've had to put the boat away for the year... had a pretty good run at the muskies this fall, and it's hard to quit, but hard water sort of forces the issue.
Thanks for the tow offer, I'll be sure and flag you down when I'm in need.

Ice was over most of Zippel Bay on Sunday and ice was forming quickly on $ Mile Bay on Sunday as well. Do not think either will be open by the weeks end. Hard water season will soon be here.

How much snow is on the ground up there? Heading up for deer season and kinda curious.

Fisky:
Muskies were pretty good, got at least a couple each day. 52,53 were the biggest.
Had lots of fish get off this year which is fairly unusual...
I'll try and email you again.
Looks like winter is really going to set in early this year!

Nice One smile.gif.

Fisky,
Thanks for the snow update. I've been seeing tons of deer around when I've been up there. Looks like we might be heading for an old fashion winter. I'll have to plan an early ice fishing trip this year. Yea!

Fivebucks, there is about 2-3 inches of snow around the Roseau area, and it's snowing now. The deer are pretty thick this year for sure.
Dave, I got your email, sounds like you had a great fall trip, wish I would have made it up there for that lesson! I want to see that picture of your dad's big Muskie, but for some reason it's not downloading no matter what I try??? Maybe shoot it my way again when you have the time. So how was the Muskie fishing this fall in general?
This cold weather has got me waaaaay anxious!
Fisky

Looks like a way thick and girthy fish too.
So what did you here up around your fish camp way as far as some of the biggest reported fish this season?
fiskyknut

Fisky:
We had a couple at around 40lbs... I'm not sure if anyone caught any other bruisers or not, I haven't heard.
Dave.

Yeeehhaa! Nice fish Widetrack. What area (not looking for specifics) of the lake are you hunting those toothy critters? I think you find Whitefish home, no? Regardless of where it came from, that's on nice fish.
Way to go!!!
Scoot

Scoot:
My home base is the Angle, but my range is pretty large, as noted by my $375 gas bill from my lastest stint up there. (ug)
I've probably had 20+ fish this size over the side of my boat...
Then theres 'the one' that got away that still gives me cold sweats at night, and that was a few years ago.

Nice fish Widetrack. I hope the guide got paid extra for that one.

I bet you've got stories to tell about chasing those buggers up there. Sometime I'd love to pick your brain about sklunges on LOW if we ever get the chance. I'm based out of the Wheeler's Point area, but I love to chase up around the East and North side of Big Island to chase ski's. This last year we managed to find some lunges and a rather large rock that didn't seem to agree too well with my motor.
Scoot

Hows the ice doing as of this weekend?

Nice Pig! Wow that angle has some nice Ski's!

has the ice completely blown off the bays or is there still some around? Im excited to get back up there on dec. 9th. Also, have you guys been catching quite a few more good sized fish compared to last year and years before, because every year we say that "wait another year and these small fish are going to be good sized" and it never seems to be the case? Just curious if you guys think the same way...?
JHansel
[This message has been edited by JHansel7 (edited 11-10-2003).]

Talked to Nick at Zipple Bay yesterday. He
said the Bay as been frozen over for nearly
2 weeks!! He also said the ice wasnt good on
the lake yet. Give it till after deer season
to around Thanksgiving.
Those 8 to 10 inch Walleyes there were so
many of last year are 12 to 13 inchers this
year and real nice fat little fish. They are
gonna take a pounding this winter.
These fish moved in to Pine Island area back
in mid August and never left. Charter boats
and the everyday fishermen camped on the
school every day till it got cold. Must be
alot of fish out there.
The Big fish never really moved in to the gaps or 4 mile bay or the river this fall,
low water? warm temps? who knows why but they
didnt. There are big fish in the system
certainly and they SHOULD be around at first
ice.
Down the shoreline a bit, out in front of
Zipple Bay they had a great fall for quality
fish. You just never know.
Good luck to all
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio
[This message has been edited by curt quesnell (edited 11-11-2003).]

I actually fished Zippel Bay this weekend with tip ups. Did not catch anything but the ice was six inches think and clear. The lake itself is still open though. The river is frozen over but may clear with warm weather. Time will tell there.

Curt- Your probably right about the smaller fish becoming the decent 12-13 inch fish, it just seemed like we always thought "in a few years these fish are going to be alot bigger" but it never happened...also your on the radio? What # is your station, its a long ride from st. cloud and as we get closer to Baudette we kind of run out of stations... let me know!
Jordan

I must be doing something wrong, I catch big fish every year, and alot of small ones, and inbetweeners too! If a guy chooses to fish in an area of the lake where there is an abundance of small fish present at that time, one can reasonably expect to catch an abundance of small fish.
I'm sure I'm not the only person that has had days on LOTW where it is hard to get fish under 19.5 inches. Depends on how, where, and when a guy chooses to fish I suppose.
fiskyknut

lake of the Woods has incredible hatches
almost every year.(almost). The guy at the
DNR office in Baudette said it this way,
The bigger fish are there but the little
guys outnumber em and beat em to the bite.
I mentioned the fish off of Pine and the
beating they have taken since mid August.
Each year class of fish only gets smaller.
The fish hatched in 95 have been have been
caught by fishermen, eaten by Pike and other
Walleyes, and succumbed to God know what all.
There are still a bunch of them left but maybe only 1 percent of what they once were.
I think the numbers of the little guys will
always be there because of the quality of
the fishery that produces these huge hatches
on such a regular basis.

Fisky is right (as usual). There are areas
that you wont catch tons of small fish. The
more you fish the lake, the more of these
spots you find and will spend time working.
It depends on, who you are fishing with? how
long of a run do you want to make? How much
time do you have.
Ahhhhhhhhhh fishing, the sport of endless
options.
Jordan
I am on the radio in Thief River. If you come
up the east side of Red Lake you wont get
the stations. KKDQ 99.3 FM and KKAQ 1460 am

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Fisky- I wasnt complaning about the fishing, dont get me wrong, i think its incredible and i love getting up there. I was just curious if you guys thought the same thing...
Curt- ill be listening for ya on the radio on our way from St.Cloud!
Also, i heard 7-8 inches on Zippel bay? Is this what you guys have heard? Its goign to be a really early ice if thats the case, just gets me more excited to go!!!
JHansel

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
