sturgeon thru the ice

I am planning a trip up that way this winter and was thinking about taking a day to target some sturgeon. Is it worth it and how is access to the river in the winter?

Do you mean pulling sturgeon thru a hole in the ice? Not certain if they stay in the river thru the winter? That's an intrigueing thought though! Set up at the head of the deepest river hole you can find, over a pretty hefty hole in the ice, and just let a fat bait lay on the bottom?

I'd guess they're pretty slow to move in winter, but I've heard of people catching them on the lake thru the ice - by accident of course.

As long as you've got solid ice, and sleds, you can go pretty much anywhere up there. Don't know of any roads plowed on the river though.

they sure are, and they do bite. there's a video on youtube of a couple guys getting a bunch on the st. croix. not legal on the croix, but i think the c&r season's still open on the rainy. check the regss before you go. good luck finding em if you do go out!
