Im surprised no body was chattering about this one.

What do you guys think. Clean check, innocent misfortune, or typical Sioux...

Story

Terrible story, the guy fractures 3 vertebra, darn near got paralyzed, out atleast for the year.

Certainly a terrible outcome. I don't believe Malone intended to hurt him, but it was a pretty big hit nonetheless. I'll go with what Martin has said about the incident (below). NoDak always plays physical, you gotta keep your head up.

I hope he continues to gather all feeling back in his extremities. Being out for the year is one thing, but hopefully there is no permanent damage.

According to InsideCollegeHockey.com website:

"Hearing that Malone was distraught over the incident, Martin called Malone and told him he has no hard feelings and that he didn’t think it was an illegal hit.

“Malone obviously didn’t mean to hurt him,” DU defenseman Jon Cook told Chambers Monday. “I don’t know much about the phone call, but that’s very classy and Jesse is that kind of guy.”"

BTW, were there any suspensions handed out?

My guess is Malone will be suspended against your Bulldogs this weekend. I'm not gonna say if this was a dirty play or not. I hope Jesse makes a full recovery from this. For Martin to call Malone who hit him to say no hard feelings says alot.

Scott, you can rip on the Sioux all you want. Five years ago I had a friend who played for the Sioux. He was hit from behind on a play after the whistle. Ironically they were playing Denver. He broke his neck, took a medical hardship for a year. Came back the next year played his best hockey of his career and still plays in germany to this day making a living. Hockey is a dangerous sport. It goes both ways. I hope Martin has the same outcome my friend was fortunate to have. Neck injuries are about as bad as they get.

Just watched it on Yioux Tube. All I can say is that the DU player really needed to keep his head up. He was looking down at his skate laces when he got tattooed. Perfectly clean hit. No boarding. No elbows up. DU guy had the puck. He was not paying attention and paid the price. It is terrible that he got so banged up. Suspension? You have to be kidding. Nothing outside the rules was infringed upon. Just to be fair, yes I am a Sioux fan living in 'Dog(ging it) land. Loved the Sioux since Gino was coach in the mid-70's and they would bring 29 year old freshmen that played about a thousand years of major juniors before coming to college into the Duluth Arena-Auditorium (i.e. The DECC, i.e Amzoil Arena). You think they are physical now? Brother, you don't know the half of it!! Those players back then were brutal!! The puck was just a distraction to them.

Heard about the hit but this was the first time I saw it, looked clean to me and I can't really see him getting a suspension. Almost seems like a freak injury, keep you head up kids!

I think it was a clean hit and there should be no suspensions. I think it says a lot for both kids that they can realize what happened and not blame each other for anything.

Yes. I beleive he was called for charging 5 min game misconduct. The penalty was called after the play stop because of martins injury. There was a delay in the penalty being called.

I don't like having a call just because someone is injured. If it was a charge, then call it at the infraction not later just because he was injured.

Brooks, I didnt state an opinion. I dont know how I feel about the hit. I dont think he tried to hurt him.

He came from full speed and hit him though. To me it looked like he hit him with an elbow, but not a cheap elbowing penalty if that makes sense. Afterall the elbow usually does lead the way of the shoulder on a clean hit. NOw do I think players on other teams would have made that hit, maybe not.

Either way, keep your head up at this level.

Sounds like Jesse surgery went as good as plan on his neck. There's an article in the Denver Pioneer on the update this morning.

Looked pretty clean to me. Like others said Martin had his head down. Looked like Malone led with his shoulder. Don't know how many strides he took from the video so it "could" have been charging.

I don't have a problem with the hit, just hope Martin is okay.

Robbie Bina...?

Yes. Robbie was the player I was referring to. Surprise a none UND fan knew who I was talking about. Some people would just like to forget that day. I just wanted to make a point that cheap shots happen to all teams. I got a little defensive making that point. Wish I could edit some of that post but I already admit where I was wrong.

This hit wasn't as malicous the hit against robbie. The hit Frattin put on Wehr last year against Minnesota was more malicous than Malone hit. It seems the refs are calling more contact to the head penalties since this hit. I wonder if the game will become a more european style of game. Less contact more finesse type plays. I miss my old style hockey, you know like Eddie shore hockey.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
