Comparison Please-Late Dec-Late Feb

Recommended Posts

I have been fishing LOW in late February with good results. Good last year, excellent the prior year. I have an opportunity to fish late December this year. How is fishing at that time?

thanks,

Wahoo

I usually notice a slow down later in Jan thru Feb so if it were me I would go with late December or late Feb.

Honestly, they are both excellent times to go fishing. Its just up to your likes and dislikes. If you go late December, it is quite possibly the busiest time of the year. School is off, its early ice so people are excited and its Christmas time so many people have vacation. If you are mobile, and can get to a spot before many others, December is an awesome time to go. If not very mobile and you will be fishing with the crowds, then i dont think it makes much of a difference.

+1 What Bapper said! It's not hard to get away from the crowds. First ice, and last ice is when you wanna be there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fishing can be good anytime but I prefer early and late in the season.Have had anywhere from slow fishing to fantastic at all times of the year.Thats fishing.Even slow fishing up there provides at least some action and a meal of fish.Just wish it wasnt such a long drive.Always a fun time.

Hey Boar!

I was out fishing the REAL big pond for 2 weeks for tuna and just got back. Thanks for your reply. My son has set us up for the days right after Christmas at Zipple Bay. So, I'll see for myself the fishing then. I'll probably be back in February anyway as I need my weather fix every winter.

If your there starting the 27th I'll be somewhere out there.

tight lines,

Wahoo

By mobile, do you mean atv/snowmobile mobile? Or do you mean in a truck?

I'm guessing the former as the ice may not be thick enough for trucks, but I thought I'd check for clarification.

I stick to the reefs early and late season. I hit the flats around mid jan through feb. I think its the best around mid feb. The saugers hit good out deep and you can catch suspended walleye out there too..
