LOW December 12-14

Recommended Posts

Myself and 3 other are looking for a great place to catch some bottle bass and walleye. Does Ballard's do a good job for early ice walleyes? Or is there another place that we should consider?

I am sure Ballards does a good job. There are two other outstanding

places at the top of this page. The Wigwam Lodge and River Bend Lodge

and resort are big into memorable ice fishing trips.

+1 for Ballard's. Gary, Nick, and the crew always do a great job! I'm going there on Dec. 17th and can't wait.

All resorts do a good job with fishing. The difference is in the cabins. Ballards has the most modern cleanest cabins that I have been in. Border View would be a close second with their newer cabins.

I agree with RafterJ though, Nick and Gary do a good job.

Who has the nicest sleeper shacks?

Arnesens has some real nice sleepers

Adrians has some wheelhouses for sleepers.

You might not be getting out there Dec 12-14. Last year all the resorts were just getting the roads posted a few days before Christmas.

not driving out no, but lightweights and ATV/SLeds were out about that time last year. I was out on the 17th with my sled About a week/week and a half after the first brave souls ventured out.

Walking out by Dec. 12 is definately possible, and the fishing can be awesome! The Wigwam is nice, and affordable. JP is a great guy. Morris Point is another decent spot, and a good "walk-out" spot at that time of year. Just be VERY careful.

12/12-14? If you get out you will definitely be "first ice" so I don't think your going far away. That said, I would look for a resort that has relatively close spots for 1st ice.

We are also scheduled for the 10th on atvs or sleds. Hopefully they dont get the wind and we should be ok. I love Borderview with Ballards being a close second. Nice cabins and alot quieter bar atmoshphere.

Early ice up there can be awesome. Don't recall the dates a few years ago but the earliest ice I've been on LOW was open water the day before!!! We rode out on the convoy at Zippel. They took us out to 15 fow which was 6 inches. We walked out to 16 fow which was about 3-4 inches. The first day we could see open water not that far North. The second day we were on 17 fow on top of 2 inches of brand new ice! My brother and I got a little neverous with an inch of water on the ice and made our way back to 16 fow and 4-5 inches.

Was it a stupid decision? Sure! Was it good fishing? YES!!!

In 15 years of early ice trips only seen open water that one time.

If you want to stay in the nicest accomidations LOW has to offer the log cabins at Zippel is what your looking for. Never stayed in them but have toured them and wow are they nice!

I sort of doubt unless we freeze up really soon that there will be enough ice middle of December for sleeper house. In years pass want to say the end of the first week of December is when it's "early ice".
