Waterfowler Gun of Choice?

Recommended Posts

What is everyone shooting for ducks and geese? What do you like about it and what don't you like? What if any issues have you had with the gun?

I am currently shooting a Beretta Xtrema with a 26" barrel that was dipped in Real Tree Hardwoods at the factory. I have been shooting it for 3 years now and love the gun. The only issues I have ever had with it were user caused - not cleaned and gunked up when it was below zero during the late goose season. It also works as a single shot! grin

This year I bought a Browning Maxus dipped in Duck Blind but I have yet to shoot the gun so I have no opinion on the gun yet. It's lighter than my Beretta but when you are sitting in a blind the weigh has never bothered me. I am going to go out and pattern it this weekend (before the season starts).

nope

I actually like it better than the 28" barrel guns I have. With the way choke tubes are now there is no reason to have a 28-30" barrel

Nothing special here, Remington 870 with 28" barrel and camo tape. Cheap, not afraid to beat it up, and it's a killing machine! smile

Really don't think 2" makes a noticeable difference in any regard. Especially not with sound. Ported chokes will blow out your buddy's eardrums though on any gun.

Mossberg 935 is my instrument. Cheaper auto, kills birds when I can hit them. Not afraid of beating it up a bit like I would if I had a $1500 ferrari shotgun.

Well then I blow my buddies ear drums because I do have ported chokes (Rhino) and the barrel on my Beretta has been ported (angle port). laugh

3.5" Remington Synthetic Pump 12 gauge 28" barrel mod. choke when Cabela's opened in Rogers, after the rebate like 239 a pop so I got 2. With any gun it's are they in range and are you leading them where you should be. Had a good early goose season, 11 shots 9 geese, I can live with those %'s shooting remington T's and never had to wring a neck ! Stoned em dead.

I got you all beat as far as cheapness goes. Mossberg Maverick model 88 pump .Spraypainted every week to match the color of the marsh. Doubles as a machete and a paddle !

Super Black Eagle 28" = amazing

Good gun! I have one but I usually stick to my gas operated guns when shooting load between 1.25 and 1.675 oz. Call me a wimp but I don't like the recoil when shooting a ton. grin

Winchester Super X2 with a patternmaster shooting 3inch 4's for ducks and a Benelli Nova shooting 3.5 2's for the honkers.

I like how fast the Winchester is and how smooth the follow through is and I like how well I shoot with the Nova but I don't like how heavy it is.

I have a Benelli Nova, shooting 3.5" #2's for just about everything. I also have an M1 I use from time to time, but it is more my pheasant gun.

935 Mossberg 28" barrel that is rattle can painted and a extra full Kicks High Flyer choke tube. Gun and choke patterns very well with Kent 3.5" #2's for geese and Kent 3" #4's for ducks. I am hard on equiptment and this gun can take the abuse day in and day out.

Winchester SX2 1st generation model, patternmaster ext choke. shoot this gun for pretty much all my ducks, geese, and pheasants. also i run a rifled choke in it for mn deer season as well. this gun has been a flat out performer for almost 9 years now, only had to replace 2 small parts in its life time and i am on my 42nd case of shells through it.

I also shoot my Browining Citori from time to time on geese, its a fun gun to shoot when loaded up with 3" wingmaster HD 4's.

I'm old so don't take this wrong, but I bought a benelli nova, hated it, but I know it's a good gun but it's made for a dude with longer arms, I stood it up next to my remingtons and the stock is about 2" longer and once I put the layers of clothing on I had a tougher time shouldering it, but I've used a remington wingmaster, 30" barrel in the lead days (80)'s, same through most of the 90's switching though to steel went with the 870express pump, then to the 3.5" remington synthetics. The Nova was tougher to shoulder, that's all because I couldn't clear my clothing in the armpitish area, but easily found a buyer for it. The benelli was plenty smooth, just I felt I was reaching too far and it was messing up the objective of folding bodies.

Benelli Super Nova, 26", 3" black cloud. Shoots amazing, very accurate, kicks like nothing, and easy to shoulder.

I would defenitly agree with that i shoot a Benelli super nova, also with a 26", with realtree apg, lets just say not many ducks or geese get educated when i am shooting the super nova

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
