The bullet I was using was the Winchester 180gr. Silver Tip. I now primarily use 150gr. soft point and get much better results, better accuracy with my Winchester Mod. 70 bolt, and less recoil to deal with.

I have a chart that shows recoil of various rounds. A 308 has about 25-30% less recoil than the 30-06. It does this while only giving up 100-150 fps at the muzzle, an insignificant difference. It also has less recoil than a 270. To me less recoil means more practice and better shot placement. I will take that over a few extra fps any day. From what I have heard the 7mm-08 low recoil round that gets the job done. With todays quality bullets I would not hesitate to go after elk or moose with a 308 or 7mm-08. Particullarly the Barnes TSX.

It's actually a little more balistic increase than just 100fps or lbs of energy depending on ammo at 100yds but I get your point. MAybe I'm just used to the higher recoil with my 7mm or 30-378 my buddy has 30-06bolt action its not bad and the bar will be even less as a semI auto so recoil isn't my concern I'd rather have the performance and little better variety of bullet.

THanks

You'd be very happy with a .308 winchester in semi auto. Bigger than .270 with shorter action, lower recoil, and better bullet selection.
