First Sturgeon!

So my 7 year old son and I were out on the river yesterday evening about 6:30. I had him set up with with a Lindy Rig and crawler on the bottom, He gets a nibble and sets the hook, then says, "Dad, I think the fish ran me into a snag." It's not budging a bit for him. I take the pole to try to get it loose and the fish starts moving up toward the boat FAST. It flies out of the water with an amazing jump, but we didn't recognize it as a sturgeon (thought it must be a muskie, but on a worm??). With 6lb test and a medium-light rod, the fight is on and lasts a full 45 minutes -- that fish was strong! At one point he was going so fast I was worried he wouldn't stop until he spooled me.

We had no net but some nice guys nearby came over and netted it for us and snapped a couple pictures before we released it. It measured right at 40." You can see my son and his look of amazement in the bottom right corner of the picture. Good times!

Nice fish. That looks like the train bridge south of Osceola. We where there on Saturday fishing and swimming on the sand bar. Caught a few suckers, sheep head, bass and walleye. No sturgeon buts its getting to be that time of year.
