Joe Mauer and his home run

Mauer said of the home run: "It feels great. Sorry it took so long."

-Sorry it took so long

Who said that there cannot still be sports heroes? Signing Mauer is the best thing the twins have done in a long time.

Only people who don't understand baseball criticized Mauer's lack of HRs. His slugging % this year is actually 11 points ABOVE his career average, and he leads the league in 2B. It's nice that he 'apologized' that it took so long, but he sure as heck didn't have anything to apologize for!

On a whole 'nother note, his stats this year are a perfect example of why it is so hard to compare baseball stats between players from different eras. It's amazing the difference a ballpark can make! I hope to heaven we never find out, but can you imagine the numbers Mauer would put up if he played half his games at Fenway? He'd be a mortal lock to hit .400.

I'll definitely second your thought that signing Mauer was the best decision the Twins have made in a loooong time.

If Nicky Punto apologizes for not getting more base hits will you all gush over him too?

Nicky Punto is nowhere near the best player in baseball. It shows a lot of class for maybe the top player going right now, to be humble like that.

No need for him to apologize for anything (except maybe for that @#*&^%$ bunt gringrin), the fact that he did apologize shows, at least to me, Mauer actually gives a $hit. Kind of uncommon in today's sportsworld heores.

Lets not forget that he just paid for the bus and gas to get the Plymouth/New Hope team down to the Little League World Series as well. Class guy

how can anyone not love having this guy on the team? classy and humble all the way around and hitting the ball great. the new stadium wasn't built with his hitting style in mind as far as home runs go but if he wants to keep hitting singles and doubles at this pace, keep it coming.

That's awesome right there. That's up there with Bernard Berrian renting a semi and filling it full of food for the homeless shelters his first Thanksgiving in Minnesota. CLASS

I bet every professional athlete does stuff like this all the time. You just hear about it more because he is from Minnesota. These other guys are mostly doing their good deeds in their own home state or city.

Wow, he said sorry. Give me a break.

Michael Vick said he was sorry, does that make him humble?

Comparing Vick and Mauer in this situation is asinine. I think, and will until the day I die the only thing Vick was sorry about was getting caught, and if he weren't caught, he would still be doing it.

Not hitting a HR and apologizing tongue in cheek doesn't even compare to a convicted felon apologizing.

Wow, yeah that comparison is really out there. You are comparing someone who said he was sorry that he has only hit one home run at the home ballpark, to someone who killed dogs for fun.

And so what if every other professional player does something good for his/her community. That was not the point of the post. It just goes to show that he is a class act and is using that money for great things for OUR state.

Nah, it's just the nature of an online forum. White/Black tomato/tomahto

It's just about good old fashioned respect, and between Vick and Mauer, I wonder which one has earned more by his actions?

Mauer is a good example of showing kids that good guys don't always finish last.

Dave just can't let go of his Mauer issue.....

I'm glad he finally hit it, but I doubt he thought about it much at all.

Wow Dave. I hope that was sarcasm. That post is flat out bizarre. You're not really looking for examples of selfish/drug abusing/egomaniac professional athletes are you?

I've seen nothing to show me that Joe Mauer is any of those. And that's the point.

True definition of a shame:

Busload of WSox fans going over a cliff with one empty seat.

Now THAT is a shame.

I have never said anything to the affect that Joe Mauer is not a super duper, nice, stand-up guy. he may very well be the nicest guy in the world and possibly the best pure hitter in Baseball history.

But the fact is, everyone has an obligation to be nice to others and he is being paid plenty well to be a good baseball player.

No need to gush all over him like a love-sick bull looking at a cow!

Man-Love is just so embarrasing!

One could look at it and say that Mauer is more concerned about his image to the fans than how he plays, but I just don't see it. Classy guy every day of the week.

I think that the team is getting some of their $184 million back in terms of goodwill. Think of all the little old ladies that just wrote the Twins into their wills, gushing over Joe!

Well.......you did call Mauer a HERO. To me a hero is someone like the firefighters who gave up their lives in the twin towers on 9/11, not a guy making 200 million dollars to play a kids game.

He called him a sports hero, and its 184 million to play a game not 200. Sounds like someone is jealous. If you could get 40,000 people to come watch you do your job every day I am sure you would be asking for a pretty big chunk of the $$$ as well.

First of all I dont care how much he makes. He's worth every penny for a team that has the luxury to have all other offensive positions covered and can afford to waste that money on a guy that will sit for a month. I just happen to think that the Twins are not in that position.

Second of all sorry, your right it's not 200 million, it's 200 million+. Sorry but he has already played in the major leagues for 6 years and has made 34 million. That will put him at 218 million when his 8 yr contract is done. At that point he will only be 35 yrs old and if he keeps his level of offensive play up he will be able to sign a contract for just as much if not more. So yes it is MORE than 200 million to play a kids game.

3rd, I don't see any athlete as a "hero", sorry, just don't.

BTW, my 10 yr old and I are watching the Twins get pumelled by the Sox and my son just asked me, "why isn't Mauer catching?"

I couldn't answer his question, Twins just had a day off 2 days ago. Is there some other reason I haven't heard about?

Yeah..."waste" money. On a guy who will go down as perhaps the best hitter to ever play catcher - certainly the most valuable offensive player on a terrific offensive team. And a very good defensive catcher. And generates bajillions of dollars in ticket and merchandise sales. And gives back to the community

Wow, Dave. You've got this all figured out. Pat yourself on the back.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
