It has been awhile since I posted a fishing report at the CR Dam. The water level is extremely high for this time of year, making fishing a little bit more difficult. The water does seem to be going down slowly, so the fish may be relocating to new spots. But I know there are still some nice fish in there. Smallmouth bass fishing has been slow and only managed to catch a few. Pike seem to be biting now, hitting jerk baits and spinner baits. Walleyes are biting very well now during the morning, but most of them are small with a few good eater sized ones (should you wish to keep them). I did catch a nice walleye (CPR).

CR dam usually gets a fairly decent fall walleye bite, as long as the water is running, jig and a minnow. Nice river wally.

Hey thats a nice walleye! ive never really caught any walleye or pike near the dam before, i usually just catch roughfish, do you usually catch them right below the smaller dam? or where do you usually fish? any help would be awesome!

Hey e1teen93, it sounds like you really want to catch something nice at the CR Dam! Okay, let's go fishing together at the CR Dam. I'll show some of my spots and tips. PM (private message) your email address to me, or just send me a PM. Make sure you enable your PM so I can reply back. Perhaps this weekend?

was out last friday, the water was fairly high. The smaller dam on the east side was closed and the main dam was wide open and they ere doing some work on it so the water just below the dam was cooking and a little fast for my taste. was fishing for 2hours before dark and caught nothing, possibly because of the low pressure system but should pick up soon. Was out a week earlier and caught 3 walleyes and 2 bass nothing big(black jig1/4oz, rainbow chub, and bobbed)

Anyone been out on the hardwater fishing by the coon rapids dam? looking for ice thickness and reports of type of fish? Heard from an old timer that he has done good down there in the past for eyes and crappies you just have to keep an eye on the changing water levels.

I went down there and tried it my self last year. There was an older guy down there sitting on a bucket. I was only able to pic up one crappie and a few pike on tip ups. We watched that guy catch a nice limit of crappies. That is a wierd spot to fish Thick ice and shallow water

I just started fishing the cr dam this summer. What time of year does the fishing start picking up there usually? I've heard that their is some good early season pike fishing there.

Remember the dam area is the same fishing season as the rest of the area, so no matter what you have to wait until opener

ya i know, but I've heard there was a specific like 2 or 3 week period that is especially good, and i was just curious if anyone else knew about it.

Late fall is the best imo. The fish really put the feed bags on and get easy to catch.

The first couple weeks after opener can be pretty good. If there is a bad weather day that keeps people home I would go and tough it out since it eliminates the pressure.

There really isn't a magic time for them in spring because they are spawning just after ice out in closed season.

My better days at the dam where sunny, hot, calm days. Either it was just luck or good lake conditions mean bad river conditions and vice versa. Most caught between 11 and 3 in the afternoon. Channels, Drum, Smallies and Carp.

Unless you're chasing the carp, drums, and redhorse suckers.

Ya i was just going to say that, rough fish is open all year. And ya i've caught a lot of those too, although i've heard about people catching tons of smallies near the dam, but I havent had much luck with them. Are they more of a spring time bite? Cuz i havent fished here in the spring before.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
