No. I think the walleyes ate them all.

The walleyes didn't get them all! I saw a big one at Fortune Bay between the dock slips yesterday! smile

Fished them on friday for a couple hours in the afternoon and managed 2 follows to the boat and one that crushed my bait about 15' from boat and no idea how I did not hook him.

Also wife had one follow as well right to boat.

What's the word guys? Went out for the first time on Wednesday. Got on the lake at about 430am and started on the rocks and didnt see a fish. Moved into some weeds and caught a nice 39" on about the 3rd cast. Ended up being the only fish I saw or caught the rest of the time (minus the 8 or so small pike I caught.) Just curious what kind of structure you guys are seeing (or not seeing) the fish right now. See ya on the water.

Never really fished for musky till this yr. And we were just outside of greenwood fishing some weeds with a rocky bottom and I had 2 followers. Got pretty excited but no hits.. I was casting a X-rap JS13

Opening Weekend was pretty good, with 4 in the boat for my brother and his guests, including a 3 fish night on Sunday that weekend. Topwater has seen nearly all the action, until the past week, where blades began to turn on a little. There has also been a structure trolling bite going, with a few fish in the last week that way. Rock has been devoid of life so far, but in the last few days a few fish are finally showing there in a few spots. Shallow weeds have been inconsistent, with fish moving in and out, one day they're there, the next they're not. This is a West End report, below are the two biggest so far this year for my brother and his crew!! Get out there and get some guys!

Thrax,

Thanks for the info. I will be comming up in 3 weeks. As long as we do not get another July cold front like last year I am thinking the timing will be perfect.

Nice fish man....

Nice Fish! Was up for a couple days on Monday and Tuesday mostly on the east end. Tried weeds, rocks and even some open water and managed one small follow and a handful of small pike for our efforts. Was charting some big arches off the sides of the structure that I was suspecting were skis but who knows. Weather was very up and down. Had storm come thru on Monday that dropped temps a good 10-15 degrees afterward. Oh well, lots of season left. Good luck!

Alright guys, im heading up on thursday, where are the skis at? mostly in the weeds still i assume? anyone one have any luck or heard any good reports? Typically the smaller baits work the best this time of year but i know the water temp is somewhat ahead but not for sure.

Guys, the West End bite is ON! I am not sure of the exact count, but I know my brother has had at least 6 in his boat since the evening of the 26th, including another over 50 and at least one more over 49. The others are nice also, all mid 40's range. I'll put up a full report tomorrow evening, just got home from fishing myself, and will be up at the Big V myself Thurs night - Sunday evening, and hope to get in on what's been some hot action!! Good luck Niles_Bay_skis! Maybe we'll see you on the water! Black Ranger 618 console boat, Merc Opti on the back.

If you aren't in to fishing the night bite, there has been some mid day action. Most of the fish we have been moving have been in and around, or adjacent to the deep weed edges. There has been some activity on points and on islands just outside of the weedy bays here on the east end.

Rocky ledges along the wind blown shorelines have also been active during the day light hours. There are a lot of Whitefish moving around, especialy on the west end of the lake. We watched several large fish rolling on the surface right in the middle of the school of surfacing Whitefish yesterday.

Unfortunately, we could not get any of them to follow on our Whitefish pattern crank baits.

I have had a lot of fish boil on the surface or jump clean over my topwater offerings. Water temps are almost at that 70 degree mark and it should reach it by this weekend. We are expecting highs in the 80's for the next few days with lots of sunshine.

Good Luck!

Niles_bay_skis,

Fish a mix of rocks and weeds and you will find fish.

[Note from admin: Please see forum rules before posting again. Thank you.]

Water temps are hitting prime, the fish are going to start getting active. fish hard and mix up your spots and you will find fish. There isnt a specific awnser to your question. There never is.

urban cowboy you started out with your post, fish a mix of rocks and weeds and you will find fish. then you say there isn't a specific answer to your question, there never is. ace was trying to help . some people are not as experienced as you are. so anyone out there with daily knowlege of the area is valuable. thats what this forum is for. i think you gave good advice and so did ace minus the sarcasm.

I'd say the fish are active now, heres the report I promised. My brother Jeremy and his fishing partners had a 3 fish evening Saturday, put a 50.25 in the boat Sunday, and had another 3 fish evening on Tuesday with a 49.5 getting the top nod that evening.

Fish are beginning to move on blades, but don't count out topwater and glides which are also getting bit still. Fish seem to be spreading out a bit more after being fairly tightly bunched, I'd not stay in an area long if you are not moving active fish. The West End is absolutely going bonkers with forage, I can confirm guideman's post about the open water trolling bite being on, shallow running baits and big rubber are getting bit, watch the graph, its not hard to find serious forage concentrations right now. Rocks have really begun to pick up also (the spreading out mentioned) but seem to be wind/dark dependent, the fish on them daytime/calm so far are very lethargic and not moving much, come back to them at peak times.

Heres Charles from MI with a 44.5 (he's only 13) and Mike from IL with a 50.25 from the last couple days, all caught with my brother Jeremy.

There sure haven't been the usual numbers of musky fishermen around yet this year, at least on the far west end.

Wait till this weekend and beyond. They will all show up in July but then again maybe 10% unemployment might have something to do with it.

I guess I just got frustrated because it is a massive lake, fish are everywhere. A question like "I am coming up thurs, where are the fish" got me going a bit. Ace knows his stuff, I didnt meen to offend.

i did not think you offended anyone and i have been frustraded plenty of times. sometimes when you hear the same advice it sounds so the same. but when the people that give the information that live there it's important to the people asking. i ask all the time even if i know the lake. you know its a day to day thing sometimes. i will be looking forward to any information you can give. i live in andover here in the cities and used to fish all those waters when i was younger. man do i wish i could be there the rest of my life. but i have my kids and grandkids here now and i would never give that up. i take my family up there now so they can enjoy the best of the best. take care and good luck with everything you do.

Golly, I am here now. Anybody know where the fish are? I know they aren't under my dock. :-) Pretty windy today, by the way. But I can always use a little help. Been sort of slow for everything this year for me on the remote west end.

Hey Del,

Your shouldn't feel all alone Del, it's been a struggle for everybody this season so far. The Walleye's on the west end have been almost invisable lately. It's not much better on the east end either.

Have a great 4th!

Thrax & Ace,

Thanks a lot for the in depth reports---Really great stuff!

No where else to get this type of info---Keep up the good reports. I look forward to them.

And by the way don't get too specific---LOL

I'll be on the Big V. starting July 13 for a solid month of Musky fishing vacation.

Say Hi--Newer Black Tuffy Osprey/Esox Deep V.

Thrax---Is there anyone hotter than Jeremy right now on the Big V?

One of his good nights equals a whole summer for me.

Three 50inchers already--Wow! And those are the ones I know about--maybe more.

Good fishing---Save some for me

I've decided it's bass and northerns for a while. Although, I did actually see two walleye caught last evening (none by me) in a spot sheltered from the wind.

The walleye fishing is pretty decent... didn't make it out yesterday but was pretty successfull the last 7 8 days in a row

Just got back from 9 days spent on the east end. It was a family trip so fishing was mostly in the early mornings with a couple of evenings and mid day trips mixed in. Most of our time was spent fishing muskies with very very little action. Fished a lot of weeds and some rocks and only moved 2 fish for the entire trip and couldn't entice either into eating. Moved both fish on the rocks one on blades and the other on topwater. Everything seemed slow. We only caught 1 walleye and 1 pike while fishing muskies and only caught a couple dozen small pike while targeting them. I was also surprised by the lack of boats especially for a holiday weekend. I am not sure if it is the economy or the poor bite, but we rarely saw another boat in the mornings and we didn't have to get in line during our mid day and evening trips either. The one exception being some pressure in Stuntz Bay during the day.

That's all I ask!

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.
    • Mike89
I'll bet she's better at it!!!!
