My grandpa used to talk about using eggs for catfish and bullheads. I've tried them with some moderate success a few years ago. They do work, but you just have to catch them in the right mood.

Ladies and gentlemen pickled eggs for kitty cat bait is not a joke. I first learned of this method from an ol' redneck catfisherman in Oklahoma. I lived in the Lake Arcadia area for a time after high school when I was tryin to court a southern belle. Anyway back to the eggs. He was kind enough to show me a trot ine rig for channel kitties. We hammered em out on Arcadia with this rig! When I moved up here, I thought why not give it a whirl on Sabes since I know there are some big channel kitties in the lake. I saw that trotlines were illegal, but I saw that tipups through the ice were legal here in Minny. Sure enough botta boom! I caught some fish on it. The key to catching them in the winter is that you can't use a whole egg. You gotta use a quarter of it and for some reason you can't use the yolk. The pickled eggs that have beet juice on them work the best. I figure must be because the catfish are Vikings fans. I am a little superstitious too every time I put the line down the hole I say out loud. Here kitty kitty kitty, want an egg? If I don't say this then I don't get a bite ever. Don't knock it until you try it!

If you make the pickled eggs with beet juice and they turn out pinkish would that work as well or would the beet scent throw them off? I guess theres only one way to find out huh?

I still think this is a joke. But I am glad my favorite bar has pickled eggs available.

That's akin to using prime rib, such a waste of deliciousness.

Lol at this whole thread. I like Sabre and fish it from time to time thus was hoping to read an actual report...looks like most of the talk is whether or not pickled eggs are good catfish bait.

Anyone have any luck out there with the eggs? It's been a bit too cold for me to head out, will give it a go hopefully this weekend.

Anyone who wants to target cats this winter and actually share information, message me. I targeted them on Sabre and Roberds last year, without much luck... but plan on hitting it hard this year.

Update from the weekend. I pickled a fresh batch of eggs for my kitty cat excursion last week. I was able to get ahold of some quality pickled beets and added the juice. The eggs acquired that rich royal purple color. Me and my cousin ventured out in search of some giant kitties that we know reside in good old sabes. We fished hard after drilling holes all over out there. Had a few looks and was able to land an 18 inch cat. Just pounded it. Other than that it was a bit slow. Thinking the cold weather has given them a belly ache or maybe it was the pickled eggs.

So do you soak the eggs in the beet juice or just dunk in a jar before dropping into the hole? I'm thinking of giving it a try.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay in response... been SUUUPER busy chasing fish all over MN. Buddies been asking me to go everywhere. I let them eggs marinate in the beet juice like you would a good steak. Let em soak to really pick up the flavor. Make sure you only use the egg white and quarter it on a number 10 treble works best. I need to get out to Sabes this weekend. Maybe Sunday me and my cousin will do some hole hoppin' out in the heat! Here kitty kitty! Want an egg???

Well looks like my pickled egg trick for kitties on Sabes has run out of luck. Not a bite in my prime spots over the weekend. Maybe the lake got fished out! Me and my nutty cousin fished all over and not a bite! I guess I will now switch gears and start warehousing SLABS. The purple egg dream is over!!!

Drilled a couple holes in deeper water fished with my secret kitty cat pickled eggs and whammmmo! A couple nice brutes!!! Can't wait for late ice! They should really pound then.

Went to Sabes for what will be my last time of the hardwater season. Caught 4 more quality fish on pickle egg white chunk on a slick jig. The wind was a little wild, but overall a good way to end my campaign for the season. See you guys out there in my trusty lund Mr. Pike!!!!

Is sabre safe to drive on all over? I was going to head over there and try to find some of those egg kitties.

Posted

I wouldn't drive a truck on any lake right now. I hoofed it out there. I needed the exercise anyway after this long winter.

Anyone else going to try for the spawning sunfish on Sabre this weekend?

Heading there on Saturday, I've never fished it, let alone ice fished it. since it's part of the Canon, are there any spots I should be wary of (inlets, outlets, etc), has anyone ventured out there yet? If so, what did you find for thickness?

This post is all about safety, not asking for fishing pointers. I prefer to find the fish myself smile

not sure... Catfish are in there...

as the map depicts and from the last time i was out there, the inlet/ or outlet is right next to the public access. so just be careful there. other than that i think other than it being a flowage there is nothing else out there ie airator or other. But i have not fished the lake, looked at it before to fish, but never been.

I will try to report back what I find. I noticed the inlet on the map, I'll follow tracks as I'm sure others have been out.

Heard about the cats and would like to try and target them sometime, going for pike this weekend, though.

Ice on Sabre is definitely walkable and we walked across the entire lake, pulling my buddies darkhouse full of gear on skis. I found as much as 8" of clear ice in one spot and as little as 4" in others so I'm sure there are thinner spots closer to the outlets and inlets of the cannon. Looks like someone had a wheeler out there but the tracks didn't get too far from the access.

we speared and put out a couple of tip-ups. Two flags, no fish. No pike on the spear either, but it was fun to watch the rough fish come cruising by. There are some BIG carp in there.

Posted

sounds like maybe a day of carp'n would be in order??

Posted

If you're one who likes to smoke them or can put them to use in other ways, you would have no problem sticking a few out there. Lots of buffalo and other roughies as well. I'm not sure if they taste the same or not but my friend is gonna find out because I did spear a buffalo thinking it was a carp (water was a bit murky) and he's going to smoke it.
