I got lucky and filled my MN tag this morning. I had been alternating between two properties, seeing tons of birds, but none would come withing range or present a decent shot. What was most confuzing was the number of birds that I saw without hens, and still none would committ. Thursday morning was the only time out that I didn't see anything. Thursday night, A nice tom snuck up behind me and literally walked 2 feet from the group of trees that I was leaning against. I watched him strut behind me for 20 minutes and couldn't convince him to come on my side of the fenceline(property line as well). I have to admitt, I was very tempted several times. Both Friday morning and night, I had a tom coming in pretty good and was busted by a hen coming from the other way. Maybe should have learned a lesson from that the first time. On Saturday and Sunday, I hung out in my groundblind listening to raindrops and occasionally watched and swore at some turkeys. There was a turkey that would gobble and strut behind me in the woods but would not come out to play. Last night I watched 6 toms go to roost not far from my blind so I sat there again this morning. For some reason, I didn't hear anything this morning until about 8:30 when this guy gobbled behind me. I am pretty sure it was the same bird that I heard drumming the previous two days. This guy finally let his guard down and put his head in an opening between two trees. It is still cool to get the same rush as shooting my first buck after half a dozen turkeys. The beard was only 1.5-2", one spur was 1 1/4" other was broke off, and 22lbs 9oz

Here is my bird from S.D. taken two weeks ago. 18lbs 12oz, 3/4" spurs, and an 8" beard

Shoot2, what a stud! Hope you're gonna mount that bad boy. I've never taken one that big (snit, who has?) in 30 years of turkey hunting.

Thx man....yep, he was a toad. That's actually the 3rd bird I've seen in 4 years here in MN at 28lbs, I thought it was a joke when I hung this guy up and the scale said 28.0...it's like we're stuck shooting the fatties! haha. Unfortunately he's not getting mounted...I've got a canvasback and a deer shoulder mount getting done right now....if I want to fish at all this summer there's no way I could spring for the $800 full body mount. I did a fan mount and will be finishing that up this week.

Duckhunter21....nice birds man....absolutely beautiful fans on both of them...I have to get out after those Merriums, dang they are beautiful.

Hope you're doing something with those hooks as well. Trophy spurs are hard to come by!

Nice looking birds guys! I had a great time hunting the D season. Every hunt we either saw toms, jakes or heard gobbling. After scouting for 3 weeks prior to the season I thought a long beard was coming home. Well they kicked the snot of us! They would either hang up or sense something wasn't right. Had a few chances, but really wanted my 1st bow kill. So held of until day #5 to take a jake. I have to say that was a rush with the bow. I was able to take out the fiance and boy for one evening hunt. He was pretty quiet until a turkey gobbled to the call, then he couldn't hold it in. Never saw that one. Here are a few pics.DSCN1146.jpg

+1 I was thinking the same thing. There wouldn't be a turkey around for miles if my son was in the blind with me. It is pretty cool though to see it can be done though.

Thanks it was alot of fun with the little guy. He usually doesn't have a nook in, but it kept him a little quieter. He turns 2 in July. His eyes got pretty big after the loud gobble within 60yds or so behind some cover. Good Luck to those that are still after them!

Where do you go that charges that? I just brought mine to the taxi and it was a little over $400 for full strut.

2nd day of my season and scored a nice Tom this morning. I had 4 different Toms gobbling at me on the hillside and ravine above where I set up this morning. I could hear them working in closer when my brothers cattle herd came over the dam I was set up on and started nervously approaching my decoy and touching it with their noses. When they were done sniffing it it was at a 45 degrees angle. Just as they were losing interest I heard a loud gobble just off to my right side. A large tom was coming in from the other side of the creek from my blindside. He was about 30 yards out when he 1st gobbled. I turned my attention to slowly moving my gun his direction before he got behind the cattle when I started to hear drumming and spitting behind me. The one I was on was a nice bird so I didn't bother checking on the one behind me. I took the bird as he started to circle to get in behind the cattle. The toms still out of site kept gobbling while I retrieved the bird and walked away. Amazing hunt and back to the house by 6am. 23 lbs. 9 inch beard. 7/8 inch spurs.

Here's some pics of the bird I shot at 7:40 last night. He came from I'm guessing 400+ yards away. Got him coming with the Jake gobble. He was upwind & couldn't hear the hen calling I don't think. Took him about 45 minutes to get to me. Shot him at 18 yards. He was in full strut & fan mode for about 15 minutes, the last 150-200 yards, what a rush!

Hopefully you can pull up my FB photos. Also pics of my set & the bird my cousin shot yesterday morning.

Wednesday this bird got hung up about 60 yards out from my decoy. So on Thursday I left the decoy in the truck and I toned down my calling. He came looking for me from about 2oo yards. 24 pds 2oz, 9 in beard & one spur 1 in & the other one was broken off half way.

Congrats.

Often decoys can work against you late in the season. But you never know. Glad you figured out the right formula Delzz.

I was able to finish off my E season with some luck. Went out scouting last night and saw a longbeard and 2 jakes feeding in a field, watched them head into the woods a little after 8:00, stopped by the farmers house got permission. Set up this morning stayed a little back, not exactly sure were they roosted. No gobbling on the roost, and a late fly down. One of the 3 starts to gobble in the woods, and slowly works his way to the field. Now all 3 are heading our way,the jakes get to about 20 yds. and decide to fly across the river. The tom is still slowly working his in,he is limping pretty bad. The wind had our decoy turn and face him, he strutting on and off for 10 min. FInally he gets to under 50 yds when he turns to face the river,Thinking he might follow the jakes lead I get ready boom turkey down!!! 21.5# 11" beard 1 1/8" spurs. Weather was tough last couple off days, Hopefully it improves for those still chasin good luckDSCF1965.jpg

I hunted (WI) Apr 21 thru the 25th with no luck. This is my first time hunting so I wasnt expecting much. I picked up a second season May 12-16th. I have been seeing a tom on my parents property and the neighbors as well. I went out yesterday and heard nothing, but as I was heading home to get ready for work I saw him in the neighbors field. I went our there last night right before dark to see if I could see anything, and sure enough as I turned the corner he was just taking off into the trees on the neighbers property. I called the neighbor and got permission to set up there this morning.

I got out there early this morning and set up a jake and a hen decoy. I work at 830 so I dont have much time in the morning to hunt. It was raining all morning. I was calling very little and getting no response when I did, so I gave one more call and put it away. It was getting time for me to head in, so I set my gun down, stood up, with my chair between my legs, and I look to the left and there he is, 10 ft into the field about 75 yds away. I am still a little concealed by a tree but now I am wondering how I am going to get my gun up. He saw my decoys and worked his way towards me. He was looking the other way and I was able to grab my gun, and everytime he looked down, I inched the gun closer and closer to my shoulder. This process took about 10 min and the whole time I was in the standing crouch position tryin not to move...my legs and back were burning! He came to about 35-40 yds and I took the shot. He is 20 lbs with a 9.5" beard and 3/4" spurs.

Unfortunately I was alone and couldnt take any pics in the field so I had to settle for my wife taking a pic in the garage. The fan was soaked, and I wish I couldve gotten some better pics, but very excited about my first bird!!

My buddy Dave and I hunt together in Wisconsin. Opening morning of our season, May 5th, Dave shot this 25 pound hawg, with an 11" beard. I was carrying my bow at the time and this bird was just out of my range, otherwise I probably would have been the one to tag out early.

DSC02508.jpg

Three days later it was my turn. I had traded in my bow for the gun by now and wouldn't you know it, I shot this one at 15 yards. He's 22 lbs. with a 9 1/2" beard.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
