Am heading up to Rainy this weekend and would like to try my luck at some Sturgeon fishing. I understand how to fish for them i am just wondering if they bite at night. Not being much of a site biting fish i am curious if anyone ever catches any of these beasts at night?

I got this beast below the dam at International Falls last fall.We guessed the fish over a 100 lbs.

A beauty bb1, looks like a hondo easy!

I wonder just how big they are at their top end in the system? The past 4-5 years with the mass influx of visiting Sturgeonfish anglers each spring we sure have seen alot more pics than back in the good old days! 120-130's as estimated by dnr length/girth charts have been posted each year.

But, I know there are a few much larger one's roaming around. 4-5 years back on the skinny 3-4" clear ice out front of the Morris wash in early December I took a walk with a giant Sturgeonfish, She was slowly swimming upsidedown right beneath the ice, never spooked in about a 100 yards of walking and it was longer than 2 of my giant steps and about as big around as a 30g steel drum! I figered it was between 7 and 8 foot long! No lie or exageration, honest the thing was waaaaay bigger than any LOTW Sturgeonfish I've ever seen and I've fished them since the 70's. For sure one of those moments a guy gets in his life that one never forgets!!

Monday we caught a number of sturgeon and 2 of them were tagged. We reported the info to the DNR and got a nice email with some very interesting information on the fish, where they were originally tagged and so on. If anyone would like to see this info, post an email address and I will be happy to forward it to you.

If you are going after sturgeon there are a few things to be aware of. The first is that you really have to be careful handling these things. They are a big powerful fish, and if you hold them wrong you, or more likely, the sturgeon can get injured. Check out this link for some recommendations about dealing with sturgeon: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fisheries/baudette/sturgeon_advice.pdf .

Another item to be aware of is that Ontario has declared sturgeon to be Threatened in the NW part of the province. Along with the new designation the fishing regulations in Ontario have changed. Ontario has completely closed sturgeon fishing. You may not fish for them (even catch-and-release) in the Ontario portion of the Rainy River or Lake of the Woods. If you are going to be in the river or in Fourmile Bay, be sure you know which side of the border you are on. I would not rely on the base map that comes with your GPS.

Finally, the link to the length-weight-girth relationship is: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fisheries/baudette/lks_length_weight_girth_2010.pdf . This file has been updated with information that was collected last year, and it has become a bit easier to read.

Wow! What a fish!

The state record is 94ish I believe.

Out west I've read of the white sturgeon reaching 1000 pounds. I can't imagine.
