How are you getting on the lake in a Ford Contour? Or do you plan on hopping in with someone?

truck or atv? i planning to hit bsl tomorrow

Posted

Most are using atv or sled but I did see keith and there were a hand full of trucks out there. The ice is getting black and I did find some thin spots in between two islands. I have a atv so I did not drive my truck out there just not worth it.

As for the fishing it was great till noon then real slow after that. Did manage 2 limits out of 4 guys but we caught a ton of 9 inch crappies. But the tails have to be touching in a 5 gallon bucket to go into it. The fish were real finicky at sun up but then were able to catch them with a crappie minnow after that. Pink and white did the trick today.

And I picked up a bunch of trash today if you see some can you stop and pick some up I like that lake but there must be alot of people that dont like it or they would not trash it like that.

First time up to BSL this weekend, my family and I stayed with friend who has a cabin on the lake. Fished Saturday and half a day Sunday, and we couldn't see another fisherman from where we were, it was nice. It's nice to finally fish an area where no one has fished at all, something nice about having a spot all to yourself. We drilled holes in about a 20 X 30 yard area with about 35 holes and caught well over 100 crappies in about 12 hours of total fishing time. Got most fish on a vertical jig in a size 12 with waxies with fish ranging from 8-13.75". I tried some plastics but they just wouldn't touch them at all. Sometimes they wanted 2 waxies on there, sometimes just one t boned, and sometimes one threaded on the hook. They were'nt overly aggressive but we had spurts of activity throughout the day. Saturday was better than today, I was hoping today would be better with teh nice weather and sun. All fish were caught in the bottom 5 feet of the water column.

One thing I noticed, which I have never seen on another lake, was how these fish would act. We hole hopped both days and once a fish was marked I'd drop down and almost every time I got within a couple feet of the fish it would start sinking. I found that if you pushed the fish down and dropped your bait at the same speed as the fish was sinking hovering about 6" aboove the fish, once the fish stopped if I could get it to turn and start comeing back up on my bait I would get it to hit about 75% of the time. Occasionally it took 2-3 times of the cat an mouse to get them to hit, but they would go eventually. If there were 2 or more fish you didn't have to worry about it because they would fight over it. In all it was a great trip and we marked a lot of fish, I would say 1 of 6 marked fish would bite. The spot we fished had tons of fish and we caught fish out of every hole we drilled. I look forward to coming again next year.

CK, sorry I didn't make it over to where you were at but we had fish where we were and it was a much shorter ride to our spot.

That was a great report and yes you picked up on the nuance of BSL.

WTG on finding some nice fishing!!!!

Gotta send a big thank you to CK, Steve and your buddy (didn't catch a name) for letting us follow you guys around and show us the lake. I had a great time on my first ice outing to BSL. Fish weren't jumping out of the hole but enough to keep a guy busy and I got to check tulibee off the chart of fish I've caught. CK I'm gonna have to find those baits of yours on the internet they are the ticket. Gotta say you held up to your name with the that piggy pie you landed. Congrats again on the beauty! Might have to start calling you No Meat Keith! I'll be sure to shoot you a line if I'm up this summer to do some fishing otherwise hopefully fish with ya next winter!

Hey feathers, I left those jigs in your car, you're more than welcome to keep 'em. If I remember right they're in the cupholder.

Yeah, it was fun, we ended up with 9 keeper crappies and 9 tullies, threw a couple crappies back. I got a couple more after you left, probably 5-6 crappies. I also caught a monster tullie, 21 1/4 inches, biggest I've ever got. Fat little sucker, too. I'm real excited to get those things outta the smoker, my boss is gonna stick 'em in tomorrow, we'll see how they turn out.

As far as ice, we drove vehicles out on Sunday, but by the time I left Sunday night it was sketchy at best. The landing was still fine, you could just tell the ice wasn't in the greatest shape all over the lake. If you're looking at driving a vehicle out this week, I would strongly recommend against it. ATVs/sleds should be good for another week or so.

Oh, and we got fish all over the north side of the lake, from the river to the big point on the east side of the lake. Seemed like the crappies were more towards the west/northwest area, tullies more towards the east.

"Lures with a built-in light have been effective in the stained water. Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal **as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure (not on a dropper line)."   So all the pictures/video's that show the dirty bombs with a dropper line are illegal?

I'm not a big FB user, but have an account for checking the Vermilion pages or a few other organizations that I'm involved with. I'm generally not a social media fan. However, social media can be great for helping to reunite people with lost items. I can't believe all of the lost dog/cat posts that get posted.   Next time give your son the hand auger! I still don't own a gas or electric. I never have to mess with something that doesn't work, and if I ever get cold I can just drill another hole and get warmed right up. Plus there's a sense of relief when you reach the bottom and then accomplishment when you break through. Unlike the starter cords on a motor, the auger doesn't seem to bother my crappy shoulders.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters reporting great action on walleyes and saugers. Some ice roads are now extending over 19 miles out, staying on productive schools of walleyes and saugers.  Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best ice seasons in recent years. If you're fishing on your own, be sure to bring an extension for your auger, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure.  As always, it's fishing, but February has been highly productive for most anglers.  It's Lake of the Woods, be prepared to catch some small fish along the way.  This also shows the health of the fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of opportunities. Pike fishing never closes, and with thick ice, conditions are shaping up well for late-season action. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are catching walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout with some pike, tullibees, and crappies mixed in. Watch electronics for suspended walleyes. Many are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish fries with extra to bring home. Best Techniques: The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking continues to be the go-to strategy. Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head are producing consistent bites. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well. Lures with a built-in light have been effective in the stained water. Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal **as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure (not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, is catching many of the neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best, while other days, afternoons produce better. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and paying attention to electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the most productive times for walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head has been the most effective presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been good by anglers targeting them. (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release.) Safety Note: While ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, they can vary significantly due to the current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent in the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move fish houses, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a solid mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies are being caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Perch, crappie, and pike seasons open year-round Whether you're looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, comfortable lodging at a resort, or you are fishing on your own, there's a perfect option for every angler.
