I am thinking of trying for some this week or next week. the river is still at a decent level and not to high. checked montissippi park and the kadler ave access. kadler ave had slower moving water. montissippi has a very defined break line from where the water is moving fast and the area by shore is almost still. will post if I have any luck.

I checked the access at kadler ave today and was amazed at how high the water has gotten in just 6 days from my last post here. I wanted to try fishing from shore but with the water so high and all that ice coming down now I think I will wait a little bit before trying it.

I just got home from a really good night between Montissippi and Xcel.

I mean a really good night.

Couldn't find any sucker minnows around so I got some chicken liver and I'm glad I did.

Cats were slamming the liver.

8pm-10pm was non-stop. 14 cats in 2 hours. My arms are tired.

Definitely going back Wednesday. Wind-shmind.

River came down quite a bit since my last boat trip. I'd say down 2 feet from a week ago.

I never weigh fish but I measured one of the 3 big ones I caught at 26".

I don't know if that's even big. Maybe 6 lbs. Maybe 7.

I don't know. Most were 3-4 lbs.

I went back Wednesday night to the same spot at the same time and I only boated 1 cat in an hour so I called it quits at 9pm.

The local bait shop at the corner of CTY 11 and HWY 10 has frozen smelt and for $5 you get quite a bit of bait.

That's what took the 1 fish. Switched to liver halfway through and didn't get a bite.

That's how it goes sometimes, right?

"Shoulda been here last night..."

Water was 51 above the nuke plant and only 54 below so you're not tied to Xcel and down. Not enough of a temperature difference to matter, IMO.

do you guys ever fish off shore around the area i wanted to try that out

I have fished off the pier at montissippi and when the river is down you can put on waders and walk a long section of the river both up and down stream. There are cats there. last year a guy and his 2 kids hooked into what would of been probably a 6 to 10 lbs channel cat. I seen it the second before the line snapped. Fishing is better at night but you can still get them during the day. Montissippi park techinally closes at sunset but I have been down there fishing after dark and have never had any issues with the deputies that patrol after hours just make such you are fishing at the access by the pier and are not anywhere else in the park because then they may ask you to leave.

i fished at the ellison park tonight and caught a few off shore, hoping to try a few different spots. Can you get flats around there anyplace?

mrklean no flats above the Coon Rapids dam and hard to find any evidence of the past Pool 1 going into true Pool 2 in downtown Mpls.

I was thinking of organizing a get together for shore fishing the Mississippi North some time soon. If interest is shown, we could have it either in Monti or Elk River area. I was told of some great channel action from last Wed./Thurs. in the ER area. I should be out one evening in the next day or two.

Shackbash,

That sounds like a good idea to put together a shore fishing get together in the area for some cats. It should draw some interest. I know I would be there if my schedule allowed me. Another get together that would be a fun time would be something up on the sauk river chain of lakes. Everyone lauch their boats from the same launch and fish as a big group. If a person didn't have a boat they could find someone to ride with that had a open seat. keep me informed if you do put something together.

i would be game for the shore fishing for sure, that sounds like a ton of fun, plus i would think we would get a lot of people who dont have boats to come out.

livers and cutbait are consistent producers for me in the areas of Monti, ER, Otsego and Anoka. standard techniques apply for the most part. as far night fishing the parks around Monti, mostly the Co. deputies will let you be as long as you're not doing anything stupid (starting bonfires, raising a ruckus and the like). sometimes they do ask you to leave however. kindof a roll of the dice

The only one who I show ultra secrete spots to is Grant. grin How you been doing buddy?

I will put the feeler out for a get together. Even if it just 3 or 4 guys, let's me up and better our chances at seeing a close to or over 20lb channel. grin

Update...

wasn't out real long but livers steeping in a mix of chicken blood, and the contents of a can of whole oysters and a can of garlic sardines performed well. Stunk to high heaven, but the fish liked it.

Begin Ranting now.

found out last night that because of some blankety blanking fools being stupid in Montisippi park, the Sheriff's Deputies have been directed to strictly enforce the rule about the park closing at sunset. The officer I talked to admitted in so many words that "It's not guys like you who just want to come down here and enjoy the park, do some fishing and generally leave the place cleaner than you left it- it's just that some stupid troublemakers have to go and ruin it for everyone"

my thoughts on the deal, and for that matter what I am going to do from this point on, is to make myself an example of how park patrons should behave, and if I see someone for example lighting a fire, or such thing politely remind them that it's not allowed and such things can ruin the use of the park for the rest of us if they go too far. Now, I'm not going to be getting in anyone's face over this stuff, unless of course what their doing is perhaps endangering myself or someone else, but I think that we as responsible outdoorsman can easily do our parts as proper stewards of the natural resources.

End Rant

i fish from shore, no boat for this guy, i was fishing montissippi thursday night was out till about 930, the cops drove by a few times but never asked to leave which was nice. This weekend i went back to montissippi lots of people fishing there, no luck here, a group was fishing and one guy got a nice sucker and let me keep it for cut bait which was very nice of him. No bites there so i went to fish by the bridges and got a few the biggest were in the 24" range on livers, and one was shirmp i left in the liver blood.

Grant and mrklean,

check out my thread I started about the montissippi hours. I got a clarification about this from the head of the wright county parks department. I posted his reply to my email in this thread.

Right before the cop came down to speak to you, he dropped off a warning ticket on my windshield. (must have happened while I was B.S.ing with you by the access).

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
