We finally have someone with legit power! Even though hes 39 he hopefully will still have it. And now hopefully Kubel can play left field everyday and let Thome DH which puts Delmon on the bench!!!!

Prolly not but he's an established vet and you know what hes going to give you. Yes, he's going to strike out alot but he'll also prolly hit many bombs. Most of all like I said above I hope this move puts demlon on the bench, theres no way kubel or anyone can be worse in left field.

We Got 'Em ...

Now if he was just right-handed and a little younger and could play the field a little ...

Not sure I "get" that signing.

I gotta say, this is just the distraction I needed to help me get over my Vikings hangover. Love the deal, the guy's a monster, let's hope its not Joe Crede all over again. Can't wait for outdoor baseball!

Not a bad signing. Adds veteran leadership. Twins must be thinking of putting Kubel in left and Young right handed DH. There must be more in the works, maybe a trade involving Young for some infield or pitcher. Whatever happens we need some right handed power. Too many left bats.

We know he liked the Metrodome. Oh that's right, wrong ballpark!

Anyway, he can hit homers in MN. What was he, like #2 all time behind Frank Thomas here? I like the comment about 2005, that's when we should have signed him. Oh well.

I don't get this either. You could just as well give him Crede's locker. In the past he was a Twin killer. Hopefully, at his age he is still not a Twins killer. Remind me, How many championships does this leader have?

Jim Thome will be a "bat off the bench" for the Twins, according to general manager Bill Smith.

Thome agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract early Tuesday evening. "The plan is for us to play Young (LF), Span (CF), Cuddyer (RF) and Kubel (DH). ... Jim Thome’s a bat off the bench," Smith said. This dogmatic stance is sure to disappoint Twins fans, who will justifiably believe Thome's bat against right-handed pitching is much more dangerous than Delmon Young's -- a lineup swap made possible by starting Kubel in left field. Thome will instead be a pinch-hitter and sporadic DH starter when giving starters a day off.

I like the idea of having the extra power, and the lack of having him on a different team, hitting dingers against the Twins, but we need infielders, not a DH, or an over the hill slow outfielder.

Maybe Justin wont be ready, and they plan on putting him on 1st, or maybe they plan on Justin at 3rd, and Thome on 1st confused

For the price I like the signing as long as we use him in the role described above. Hopefully we will still sign a 2B or 3B before the season starts though.

Bargin, if he works out - great, if not - no biggie.

Thome in our clubhouse? He's going to fit right in with those guys. Ya never know, I seem to remember recently, of another 39 yr old guy, coming to this town and having a heck of a year. wink

That seems like alot of cash to pay someone for pinch hitting. Like said above, it would be sweet if we could trade some good talent to someone that thinks delmon has potential. One of these years we should be able to get on the clean end of the stick in a trade.

I like what Thome as a player but don't really see where he fits in on this team. Like others said, seems like we didn't need another left handed bat, especially one who doesn't run well.

I'm guessing this means no more pickups of any infielders and keeps Tolbert on the majors as their utility guy and designated pinch runner unless Valencia is ready which doesn't sound like the case. Can probably pencil in Harris at 3b and LNP at 2b unless the Valencia factor comes into play in which case Harris and Tolbert battle to see who becomes the utility guy. Guess I could see Harris be the odd one out too because seems he's not one Gardy's favorites.

Sounds like another team that will be favored to contend or win the AL Central but be huge underdogs in the playoffs if they make it. Not sure if it's enough to fool Mauer into thinking they are serious about contending for world series though.

Dang it's $1.5M. I don't think they overspent here. Very good signing in my mind.

Take a look at Delron's numbers before September and Kubel's afterwards. By eating up some DH AB's, it allows Kubel some more time in the field to push Delmon and the Twins a threat if they see postseason play. Only thing Gomez was pushing with his .220 average last year was Gardy's blood pressure into the red.

1.5 mi. for a MLB team? Thats chump change. His presence and professionalism in the club house is worth that.

Delmon will be our starting left fielder and he isn't going anywhere. get over it.

Awesome. Now we have a DH who can play 110 games, hit .247 with 20 HR and strike out a lot.

WORLD SERIES HERE WE COME!!!

We needed to sign a left handed bat to fill in for Morneau when he quits playing toward the end of the year. Good Move. Go Twins!!!!!!

LOVE the Thome signing. He hit very well before his trade to LA with one fewer HR than our leader in Kubel, and he did it in just 107 games. He is excited to get back to pitchers he knows in places he is familiar. Naysayers will be cheering his name by June at the latest. For 1.5m and some incentives? Steal of a deal compared to the 13 million Chicago paid him last year. If he hits as few as ONE HR against Chicago (preferably IN Chicago), it is all worth it! Can't be worse than the Crede/Gomez experiments.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
