Medicine Lake Fishing Reports

Yeap, its at Clifton E. French regional park off of Rockford rd (French park is what most people call it). Go west on Rockford from 169 and you will run into it in a couple miles. Its 5$ to launch otherwise the yearly permit is like 20$.

Its a pretty shallow landing and a shallow stretch out to the main lake so be prepared to push the boat if you run deep.

If you're launching a canoe or kayak you could use the park on the southwest side of the lake for free, but otherwise the park likes its money.

Heading out to Medicine Lake on Sunday morning with a friend. Hopefully the recent rain doesn't spoil the fishing there.

I'm planning on starting by looking for some pike up north, going for walleyes and then finishing for some crappies and bluegills if all else fails.

I'm renting a boat from Harty's so I can actually get around the lake, hopefully it won't be too bad a boat.

Any other advice is appreciated, otherwise I'll let you know how it went Sunday night.

I was out there this morning with my kids. They caught lots of bluegill and crappie (small) on worms under a bobber, mainly over weeds. I picked up one largemouth on a crankbait and a nice northern on a spoon, both just outside weeds.

Have fun!

Wonderful morning on the water today.

Put 28 bass in the boat in about 5 hours.

Biggest was 21"

Lots of 15" to 20" fish.

Lake Fork 4" Blue Fleck Ring Fry produced the 21" pig.

Also used Strike King Shim E Sticks and Senkos.

Was the 3rd one at the access at 5:10am and the lake was like glass.

Only "fresh" water I fished was the first area of slop that I fished, after that I fished "used" water. Pulled fish of docks that I watched 2 guys in a bass boat make repeated casts to. They were working North along the shore and I was working South.

The 21" fish was caught after we met, I caught it on the next pitch to a dock that they peppered with spinner baits and swim jigs 5 minutes before.

The look on there face was priceless, we talked for a bit after that.

I saw them later fishing the same stretch of docks with a slower presentation.

Haha, that's great that you caught the big one in "used" water! Sounds like a great day on the water.

Wow that is a great day. I was wondering when i went out the other day i had to pay $5 to get in. Is that for when ever you go? Like if you go early in the morning do you have to pay?

First, I have to say that the $50 I split with my friend for the boat from Harty's was worth it. They take care of their equipment and it was run by a stand-up guy.

Unfortunately, that didn't help us get into many fish. First place we tried was the shoreline north of the peninsula. Saw tons of schools of bait fish, and some decent sized fish breaking the water, but couldn't get them to bite. Tried top water, jigs with minnows, leeches, nightcrawlers and Gulp, and even threw out the old bobber.

Moved South to the shore opposite of the swimming beach and was able to hook up into some fat sunnies. Finished trolling there and then moved to the point and hooked up into some more slabs.

I really came to this lake looking for some pike though, so we moved up to the North side. Tons of people lined up on the shore and I didn't see anybody pull anything in. Got a good hit on a buzz bait, enough to tear up the skirt and pull it off, but couldn't set the hook.

I've put this lake back on my hit list for another day.

Where would one want to go to shore fish for pike on Medicine? I know there really is not a whole lot of places to chose from but I would like to get out and bobber fish with some big suckers.. Any help would be great..Thanks

You'll get a few off the dock next to the beach on the south side. It seems like the floating dock, not the fishing pier, is better for pike.

Thanks, thats kind of what I was thinking looks like it drops off pretty good along the shore there.. Hopefully gonna give it a try tomorrow A.M. will post if I catch anything.

I worked that area with some top water and then again with a minnow on a bobber a week ago and wasn't able to produce. Let me know if you have more luck though.

Went out for an hour this morning and lost one and caught one pike maybe 2-3 pounds nothing big.

Lake was crowded this morning.

A club tournament was going on.

Wind and unsettled weather made things tough.

Put 10 bass in the boat in about 4 hours.

A couple 3 pounders and a 4.5 the rest were 12" to 14" dinks.

  • 3 weeks later...

Went out there today. Didn't reallyknow what we were doing, caught a half dozen little largemouth and that was it. Seems like it probably has some really good fish, lots of structure...tons of weeds though. I think maybe we were fishign too close, because many casts wound up with weeds. Couldn't really fish the docks at all because of the weeds.

Has anyone been catching anything out on Medicine lately? I've been out a couple times but only managed a couple of bites. Just wondering if it's bc I'm a terrible fisherman or if it's just slow.

what are you targeting? A spring bobber can be a big help to detect bites. I also remember one time out there fishing the 30 foot hole. marking a ton of fish and downsizing till they bit. turns out they were 3 inch perch sitting on the bottome of 30 feet. needless to say i had downsized to like a #14 jig with a small berkely powerbait maggot thingy. real tiny presentation. the whole time i thought it was the 8 inch medicine lake crappie.

was out on friday before the snow storm and i managed to catch all the dink crappies i wanted. they wanted the minnows full of life and would spit it if they felt any resistence, spring bobbers take care of this problem and help out alot on this lake. they also liked the small lindy flyer spoons. i was set up in 22 fow away from the crowds

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
