I went out last night and got around fine. I have a 4x4 S10. as long as you get through the plowed snow off the road you should be good. Crappies hit best right at sundown last night. Average hit the numbers on the head. I saw some cars out there too. good luck!

Thanks for the replies. It's always fun to try out a new lake in the state. I'm thinking we are going to try it during the day and see what happens.

Travel is good on the lake. Thanks to Harty's and a few other guys plowing. I have seen a guy in a jeep plowing roads numerous times. I would like to thank him for his service. If I ever catch up to you, I would like to chip in on you next tank of Gas. Thanks!

Fish bite was good again tonight. Caught fish steady from 3-7pm We had a Huge Northern on. This thing was well over 10 pounds. Gave it a heck of a fight on 4lb test for a good 10 minutes when she finally cut the line. We were fishing in 30 fow and the crappies shut down. Within Minutes, the Gator was on! Could not lift it more than 6 feet off the lake floor, before it would take out yards of line. I am curious if anyone has caught any Huge Northerns out there on Medicine or if there are any Muskie in the this lake...maybe Sturgeon? Ha! reminded me of a sturgeon I caught last summer at Lake of the woods.

Ya it never hurts to throw a few bucks in the jar at Harty's for keeping the access open. I know he appreciates that.

Had a good morning of crappie fishing caught our limits and finally hit some good sized ones. Above average for Medicine lake for sure. I had a crappie get his tail bit off while I was reeling him up which was pretty awesome. Felt like a marlin on a light action rod!

How deep were you fishing? Sounds like the pike are moving now, maybe I should try spearing Medicine this week...

Is there an area out there thats better to set a tip up for pike? I have never really done much with them out there but I have some friends coming up this next weekend and they want to catch everything..crappie walleye, sunnies and pike. Playin guide is stressful.

How many guys do you have coming up? You might have the best time setting up over the crappie hole you were fishing the other day where that pike hit. Set one or maybe two tip ups down with smelt or a lively sucker while you jig for crappies. Best case you catch a bunch of crappies and any pike that cruise through to prey on the released ones take the bait on the tip-ups and worst case you catch a bunch of crappies.

Waterbound- that's a really good idea... I grew up in Indiana so our tip ups were NEVER in thirty feet of water. It's a whole new ballgame up here and sometimes I'm still riding the pine on fishing strategies! thanks for the help

Thats pretty much how most of my northerns have been caught this year. I have been setting the tip up/s on the edge of the school of crappies about 10 feet down. It has worked pretty well. Deadbait has been the best for me so far. Smelt or ciscos.

Good to know. I'd really like to show my buddies what its like to pull a big snake out of the ice. I think they might wet themselves.

Haha that's what fishing is all about, having fun with others and watching them react to things like big fish and cracking ice.

Was out in 31' of water in the hole by harty's we marked fish and they followed our baits but wouldn't hit good enough for a hook set. Pretty slow fishin' compared to the usual. Seems like some late season lock jaw.

Try getting away from the crowds a bit. Even if your only 50 yards away from the 'towns' you will do a lot better.

I have to agree with Deadeye. Last weekend we set up away from the main group, which my buddy kept questioning but when he caught fish for 5 hours he changed his mind.

I was spearing on Medicine today near the creek that goes into the park. I didn't see any pike but I did see something (probably a bass or something) moving down on the bottom...it wasn't big but it was something.

Thinking about heading out tom. after work. Just wondering how the roads are and general idea where to go? I haven't fished it since early ice.

Did you mean Harvey's rather than Hasty's?

I was out today for a couple good hours and it was great. The weather was perfect - a balmy 35 degrees with lots of sun and a light breeze - t-shirt weather for sure. 40 feet of water and the crappies were biting on anything I could get down to them whether it was a wax worm or a crappie minnow. The action was steady with a fish every 5 minutes or so but the biggest was maybe 8 or 9 inches and the smallest 5 or 6. It was a fun day but I wish a pike would have taken the bait on my tip-up.

I'm probably going to be out again tomorrow but I don't know if I'll be spearing or crappie fishing.

Hey- just a tip for clam Jr owners-

I've got the same thing- but what I've done is set the ice house up, and then staple the canvas to the base from the outside every inch or so... THIS WORKS AWESOME! it eliminates all the drafts since the canvas is one w, the base, holds heat extremely well, and it makes it super easy to assemble- you set it up from the inside instead of having to throw the tarp over the frame and then try to get it bungeed down. Also, it still folds up real nice this way. I can't find one negative w doing this to the clam jr, it actually makes it into a pretty nice little house. I fished 3 yrs w/ it the normal way and all this yr stapled down- wish I would have 3 yrs ago!!!

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
